Is it possible to order a laptop without certain parts?

Hello, I'm looking forward to getting a T61p as soon as it comes out, but I did have a few questions about what exactly I'm allowed to do when ordering from lenovo. I plan on getting the Hitachi 7k200 200 gb hard drive for the laptop, and because it doesn't seem like lenovo will offer it in a configuration I will have to order it separately.

So when I order my laptop through lenovo can I tell them that i don't want them to give me a hard drive? The same case also goes with the fact that I can buy Vista Ultimate for only $30 because of a student discount I receive, so can I tell them not to install any O/S (not that they could if I'm able to not order a hard drive), or at the very least have it come with Linux (because its free)?

I'm doubting that I'll be able to not get a hard drive and will probably just have to sell the cheapest one I'm allowed to get on ebay, but I think I may be able to do the linux thing regarding the O/S. Anyone have any personal experience with this? Thanks

No personal experience, but I'm pretty sure you cannot do that on the website. It would require a call to Lenovo, so it seems to me that would be the best place to pose these questions. There was a guy a while back that got his without an OS, but he was in a different country.

I've seen them on EPP w/ just DOS. But unless they will make an exception, I believe a HD has to be included.

Thanks. I'll try calling them and see what they have to say.

If you are a private person and want a custom built system (for example you take an ordinary model and stip it from OS and/or HDD), you will probably not succeed.

The only way is if you order 100+ machines in a batch. To do that, you need to be an IBM-business partner (which is not so hard to become, and it is only required to buy for at least $20000 (I think..))

The option you have there (for example for T61) is the "ThinkPad T61 Configure-To-Order system", ThinkPad T61 7660-CTO

I am not sure thou if this is country/region specific, nor am I sure if you can order parts that they have not in stock, such as parts for replacement or accessories.

I suppose that it will be such option for T61p also.

I know they can't even ship one without an optical, much less HD.
