Considering an R61, which uses the older, larger 12.5mm ultrabay. There's one on ebay that meets the specs I want, except that it doesn't have a DVDRW drive. Now, I've got an old DVDRW drive from another laptop here at home. Could i just stick it in the caddy for the combo drive? I don't know diddly about thinkpads, but i figure this must be exactly what you have to do if you use a hard drive in the ultrabay.

Can i stick an old dvdrw drive in an ultrabay caddy and get on with it, or are they shaped differently or something?

Yes, it's custom. No, you can't stick in any old drive.
