If I just want to plug in my monitor and keyboard and use the x200 with the lid closed all the time will there be any problems turning it off and on? Or is a dock or ultrabay required?

First of all, I don't really recommend running the computer with the lid closed all the time, as the Thinkpad will likely run a few degrees hotter.

Without a dock, you'll have to open the laptop up and press the power button to turn it on every time you choose to do so, and also, you'll have to set the Thinkpad to do nothing when the lid is closed (so it won't go into standby, for example).

    So, no, it's not required.
