I am a huge think pad fan, since my father has owned several notebooks which I frequently use, he has had dell, HP and Thinkpads amoung others. It is clear to me that build quality does matter and Thinkpads are best in this topic. I am currently a college student so I would do some ligh gaming, some media applications plus the basic like Internet and Word. My question is, should I buy a Thinkpad or would I be paying fore some business things I don't really need?, meaning I could get the appropiate laptop for me for less.

If quality matters to you, I think the thinkpad is the right choice for you.
However, the new T60 with core duo processors are pretty expensive, the model I'm looking at is about $1800 and it doesn't even come with a graphic card.
What do you mean by light gaming? Light as in yahoo pool or 3D first person shooter such as counter strike: source?
For about $1800-1900 you can get a thinkpad T60 with the following spec:
Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz
512 DDR2 RAM
60-80GB HDD
ATI X1300 (Should be enough for light gaming, I think...)
14.1" or 15" (15" comes with Flexview which is very nice)
Tell us your budget. -
My budget is about $2300. By ligh gaming I mean good 3D games like BF2 but in mid configuration, meaning at least a X1400 or 7400.

I think this is what you're looking for:

Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz
1GB DDR2
100GB HDD
14.1" or 15" (I would get the 15" because of Flexview ISP display)
ATi Mobility Radeon X1400 128MB DDR2 SDRAM PCI Express
You can find it for around $2300-2500. -
If you really want to play BF2, I would think something like the Asus W3j with the x1600 would be a better fit. Asus are well built machines.

It seems to me that you may not be quite worthy of a thinkpad. Particularly any of the T series models. Light a candle this evening and beg the ThinkPad gods for acceptance in the Thinkpad cult. Apple is a poor excuse for a real cult. Many ThinkPad owners have been known to lie, cheat and steal for their respective Thinkpads. Of course the R series is not included in the above statements.
-
I second the Asus W3J if you are doing any gaming.

i guess for your budget there are some laptops more powerful than thinkpads especially if you play games. thinkpad wasnt really designed for gamers as i always presume. the same goes to thinkcentre desktops.
and what did you mean by this:
"Many ThinkPad owners have been known to lie, cheat and steal for their respective Thinkpads."

He prolly meant "in orded to get them" (?)
