It was also a political move to appease US regulators during the buyout of IBM's PC division.

Lenovo's a Chinese company through and through.

    define "brand".

DELL and HP US companies? well they are registed in USA. HP notebooks are mainly made by winston and compal which are not USA companies. Dell produces some stuff but mostly is outsourced, including most alienwares made by flextronics ex arima, other non-USA company.

this is a pointless discussion because we live in such a globalized world.

Lenovo has headquarters in Beijing, Singapore, and North Carolina. Thinkpad design teams are based in NC and Japan.

The concept of a company's nationality is really archaic in the modern world, since pretty much all large multinationals are incorporated in a foreign nation, employ large numbers of people in every nation that they operate in, have manufacturing in less-developed nations, pay taxes to various governments, etc, etc.

As one example, although Toyota is a "Japanese company," some of its cars contain more US-made and assembled parts than some other cars from "American companies."

The question is where do the profits eventually go... I would guess China, since it is the primary headquarters.

Dell and HP are US companies. Manufacturing may be outsourced as most companies to 'flextronics', etc. to cut costs, but Dell/HP is headquartered in the US

The profits go to shareholders, so it depends.

Shareholders, executives and employees, with taxes going to both the US and Chinese governments (possibly others as well).

Actually, since it's difficult to move money around between different nations (ie, read about the highly-publicized troves of money that Apple has overseas) without being subject to exorbitant taxes. So that's difficult to say--for all we know, most of Lenovo's US profits may stay in the US.

I highly doubt it. China more than likely keeps most of the profits..

It seems you've already convinced yourself in your head that everything will lead to china, so I guess this thread is over.

Lenovo designs its products in several countries, co-develops products with companies from various nations, produces its products in several nations, and ships them all over the world.

    So does it matter?

Yes. We would prefer all development and manufacturing take place in Tennessee. :D

I dunno. If China keeps profit, they keep giving back to the US so that Americans can keep spending... what I'm saying is that things are not as simple as they appear to be.

Who cares if they're Chinese, Japanese, or Tibetan? They make good computers, that's all that matters.

Maybe it's because I'm a Chinese person living in Canada, but I fail to see the point of this thread. Yes, Lenovo was originally based in China. But really, why does it matter? Would really you buy something from say Dell that's both more expensive and has worse specs just because it was originally based in the USA?

I too fail to see the point. I would like someone to explain what the point is because after all these posts I didn't get it yet.

FUALL asked the same question two years ago and the thread spiraled down the exact same path.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/513775-lenovo-chinese-company.html

with the majority of FUALL's posts on the alienware board and the only posts on the lenovo/IBM forum asking this question, i fail to see the purpose in this thread other than starting an argument.

FUALL - if you have a legitimate reason for asking this question twice other than inciting an argument, please PM me with an explanation and i'll unlock this thread.   otherwise, please enjoy your alienware.
