It depends on your definition of "best".
I would say it is tied for best in reliability with Apple; and is best in build quality. If your a gamer, it is not best for gaming as they are usually one step behind in having the latest video controller and their sound is good if your using headphones or buds, but their speaker output is fairly low. I would saay as an all around or business/school notebook the T42 is tops.

Jack is right on, there's no one "Best" manufacturer. Each brand has its strengths and weaknesses. IBM is not the best if you're looking to get bang for the buck in performance, and their offerings will leave you unhappy if you are into gaming.

By "best" I take it you mean reliability as in build quality. I have owned an NEC Multispeed, Gateway colorbook (2 of them), Toshiba Satellite, Dell Inspiron, and now an IBM T42. In terms of build quality, I would rank these in this order: 1) IBM; 2) Toshiba; 3) NEC; 4) Gateway; and 5) Dell. The Dell was by far the worse with several cracks on the body.
