Setting up my Wi-Fi network with the help of a friend. Using a access point to connect 3 computers - 1 main computer and 2 notebooks. Anyone notice that the TKIP feature is available only on the IBM Access connections but not actually on the driver of the card (ie. you can't use it if you allow windows to manage your connections instead of IBM Access Connections).
I thought this was a little odd.
Cheers,
BM.

If your using IBM access connections, and you should use it.
Then disable allowing windows to manage your connection. You don't need two programs trying to do the same thing and the IBM program is better. I would also stop and disable the service "wireless zero configuration", you can disable it by going to start, run and typing in "services.msc" then scroll down to the wireless zero configuration, then double click on it then stop the service and then set to disable.

hehe..
sorry... I should have made myself clearer.
We originally intended to only use the windows stuff to manage the network - avoiding the proprietary software from IBM. The emachines notebook had TKIP in the windows setup but the IBM didn't. When we then looked at the IBM Access Connections it had all the security stuff - even more than the emachines (as expected ?). So we switched the X40 to this.
My friend who works in IT and does tech support was suprised by this as was I. Not that I care mind you - the access connections is a better program.
I can't remember if the wireless zero configuration is checked or not. I will see.
I just thought it was odd that it wasn't at the driver level.

I guess you probably using WindowsXP, you may need this patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=009d8425-ce2b-47a4-abec-274845dc9e91&displaylang=en
or search for KB815485.
It should show the WPA, WPA+TKIP options in windows wireless connection config screen. -
oh wow...
thanks.
this should give me options in the future if I decide to dump the IBM stuff.

Hi bitmebw,
Don't install the patch that trogman linked to unless you plan on gettting rid of the IBM access connections software as it will interfere. It is only for the microsoft's software for wireless.
If you go to IBM's support website where the updated versions of access connections is posted and read the notes before installing the updates, it tell you that you need to uninstall all the microsoft wireless hot fixes as they will screwup access connections.
If however you decide to use the microsoft wireless software(bad idea in my opinion as it is not nearly as good)then install all the patches.

Thanks... wasn't intending to get rid of access connections but I just wanted to be aware if I ever needed to how I could do it.
Thanks.

Hey Everybody,
I know I'm bringing back a dead thread, but, it pertained to my problems I'm having. Most other forums make you search before throwing out new posts.
Alright, here is my predicament, I got this mega sweet rad IBM ThinkPad Z60t and I want to use it around my college campus (Purdue if you were wondering) and they have a guide to get on anywhere on campus.

Yeah, not really Access Connection friendly. So, I've done all the upgrades to the newest versions of my IBM software just to see if anything would work, and it still doesn't match up quite right. Can someone help me get this thing up and online? Maybe I'm missing something in there. Also, there were some earlier that were against updating the Windows software because it would jack up the IBM stuff, if that is my final option, I'm willing... it would just be nice to try the IBM software first seeing that I favor it.
Thanks for your time everyone. -
My office recently installed a wireless system. Unsophisticated HP and Dell users were able to connect but I was not able to with my ThinkPad. I had a highly respected service provider to help me with my problem. He was not able to connect using Access Connections but was able to connect using Windows.
Interesting Wi-Fi idiosyncracy
