I've got an x61 and I'm installing windows XP on it. I see that the drivers from intel (storage matrix, wireless, graphics, chipset) are much more updated than those of lenovo. Do you think it's better to use intel drivers or go with the older lenovo ones?

Go with the more updated ones, especially the chipset and SATA ones.

The new chipset and SATA drivers fixed quite a lot of bugs from the old ones.

Use the most up-to-date ones. Use Intel.

The lenovo (all mfg's actually) drivers are basically the native Intel drivers packaged up and re-wrapped by individual manufacturers. Usually they do this in order to assure compliance and tailor them for specific platforms. As stated the newest drivers from Intel are usually better, they just may not have been tested and approved from the laptop mfg yet. Thats why the latest Lenovo drivers are always a little behind.

thanks for the answers guys. It seems that if you use the more updated drivers for the 4965AG wireless lan, it doesn't appear in the fn+F5 screen to handle the connections. I will look into it later on.

i believe that the latest intel driver still allows for the use of the hotkeys. youll have to look into it more, so will i when time allows. that is though is a perfect example why someone might use a mfg supplied driver over the hardware vendor's latest. good luck.

Did you try other function keys to see if it's working? The wireless driver should be separate from the function keys. Make sure you install the drivers in the sequence provided in your user manual. There should be another software package for the function keys. If it's still doesn't work, you can try installing the Lenovo driver, then update the driver from Device Manager using the Intel one.

Well the problem is not the hotkeys. When I start Access Connections I don't see the wireless radio options in the tools menu which is strange. I can't see the WLAN option in the Toggle screen of Fn+F5, I see only the bluetooth connection.
I've installed the original lenovo drivers and access connections again, but still can't see them. Maybe I should uninstall everything and try it again from the beginning.

That's how i've installed them on the first time. Now I've got the Lenovo driver, so I guess I'll uninstall them and install the intel drivers again as you've said.

    Edit:

doens't work. I'm connected to the WLAN and in Access Connections shows I'm disconnected. It doesn't "knows" at all what is the state of the WLAN. It's XP SP3.
