I've got a Thinkpad W530 and I'm having a problem installing Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). Although I distinctly remember upgrading it at some point through Lenovo Update, I noticed today as I was trying to upgrade Intel Wireless Display to the latest version that it's not actually installed on my system. Furthermore, I can't seem to get it to install either. I've tried both the latest version from Intel (version 4) and the version available from Lenovo (version 3.5), and neither of them will install. Instead, I get a message saying "This platform is not compatible with Intel WiDi or the application is in use. Please see the log for more details."

First, my system is compatible with WiDi according to Intel's listed system requirements: I've got a 3720QM processor with HD 4000 graphics and an Intel Centrino Ultimate 6300 wireless card. As the program does not appear to be installed, I don't see how I could be running it (anyone know the process IDs so I can check?) And I don't know where the log is kept (maybe in an InstallShield folder somewhere?).

I read in the Lenovo forums that some people who had a similar problem fixed it by upgrading to the latest version of the Intel PROSet wireless driver & software. I did that, but WiDi still won't install. Any suggestions?

Try to disable NVIDIA and operate your W530 with HD 4000 alone (absolutely no discrete graphics).

The WiDi problem also appears if you clean-installed Windows 7 and are not using OEM factory image (which likely has special registry keys and values).

    I believe this may help.

    Go to:
Control Panel > Programs and Features

Find and select: Intel PROset/Wireless Software

Press the Change option > Select from menu: Intel Wifi dashboard - Install it

You can also select to install: Intel PROset/Wireless Software Wifi GUI - I dont think it's needed but handy to have if you want more info about your wireless and some extra administration options.

I believe the main software you're interested in to help manage the WiDi is " Intel Wifi dashboard" , I haven't used the WiDi but I seem to remember my BRAVIA TV showing up when I had Wifi Dashboard installed.

Let me know if it helps.

    P.S - I could be getting confused with WiFi Direct :( - Anyway.. it's worth a shot.

You should also have the Intel WiDi software installed. If you launch the program it scans for any compatible devices and displays them on a list. Do you not have this software or are you getting nothing on your list?

For some reason I seem to think installing the WiFi dashboard helped.

Okay, this sounds like my problem. I did clean-install Windows. As I have the OEM factory image on the hard drive that came with the system (and is currently in the Ultrabay), do you know or know how to find which registry keys and values I need to transfer over?

I tried booting with integrated graphics only, but WiDi still would not install.

@Flickster, the WiDi software is what won't install. And I don't have a "change" option under Intel PROSet Wireless Tools. I have the options to view statistics of my wireless connection, diagnose problems with the wireless connection, open viewer to see wireless events, view and adjust settings for wifi hotspot assistant, and import wireless profiles.

    Hi Djembe,

I think we are talking of two different locations, I am talking of the control panel add/remove software area.

I have taken a screen shot to show you what I mean.

In saying that, I just had a proper read of your original message. I must have been half asleep when I first read it, don't know how I didn't notice that you couldn't even install the software.

Okay. Yes, we were looking at different locations. I was looking in the application, not in add/remove programs. However, when I went to add/remove programs and selected to change the PROSet Wireless software, I only have options to repair or uninstall. There's nothing about Intel Wifi Dashboard. This could be either because I do not have Wireless Display installed or because I have a different version of the PROSet software than you (you have version 15, I have version 15.6).

Upon further research, the latest version of the Wifi Dashboard program available on Intel's website is 15.1, and it states its status as "previously released", which makes me suspect that they have integrated the functions previously contained in Wifi Dashboard directly into the PROSet tools for more recent versions (such as what I have installed).
