Selecting this option may delay your shipment 3-4 weeks.

Is intel 5350 much better than 5300? How is the compatibility with 802.11 a/b/g/n?

I believe the 5350 is identical to the 5300 except for the Wimax feature. They should have the same compatability (good) with a/b/g/n as the 5300.
Wimax is the long unrealized Wireless broadband standard. There is finally some decent money (Intel, Google, Sprint, etc.) behind WiMax and it rolled out last month in Baltimore. It is primarily an alternative to DSL/Cable for areas that cannot be adequately served by land lines, and should be a faster alternative to EVDO/3G if you can find a network.
If you don't live in a Wimax area now (you almost certainly don't) and don't want to waste 4 weeks and $30 on a technology that may never pan out, then I would say you are fine with the 5300 or even the 5100 (this is what I have and it is fine).

The 5300 and 5350 are the same in terms of 802.11 support, the only difference is 5350 also supports WiMAX.

After I ordered 5350, it showed 3-4 delay. My estimate shipping day was changed from Oct 21st to Nov 4th.

Wimax will pan out, as long as the pricing is competitive. I think it's still a ways off...EVDO Rev A. covers most metro areas and suburbs, and that is the performance king. But it requires a monthly contract. The AT&T HSDPA (3G) performs at about half the rate of EVDO Rev A (in actual usage). However, you can go no-contract/month-to-month with MediaNet for $20/month, which is okay.

WiMax speeds promise more, but I think it will be early 2010 before the coverage is where it needs to be. By then, I will be on another laptop.

If you are stationary, don't travel much, and are in Wimax area now, you may want to consider. Otherwise, I would pass.

I'll take the 5300 and the LG display over the 5350 Wimax and Samsung display anyday of the week. My coworker ordered the same configuration as mine, except he requested the 5350 and it looks like the build is going to be including the samsung display.

    @raistlon

how did you confirm he will be getting samsung display?

WiMAX is deployed in India and the speeds are good. I believe it'll be widely available in US by early 2010.

screen is good based of the user, so i think its overrated to call LG better then samsung. of course everyone wants the "perfect" machine, but its ok to be a little imperfect from time to time, as long as the user thinks its good. hey maybe in a year or two, it can give u a excuse to sell off and buy a newer machine. :)

Hi, When did your coworker ordered the 5350? No dealy 3-4 weeks? Thats a good news. I'm thinking about to change 5350 back to 5300 because of the delay. By the way, I don't think 5350 will get a Samsung for sure. 5350'a antennas are the same as 5300, Even the camera option maks more different.

I bought the T400 several weeks ago with Wi-Fi 5300 card.

Does anyone know that i can upgrade it to 5350 WinMax/Wifi by myself? I can get the 5350 card now for $35.

    Thanks.

I have ordered a T400 with the 5350, and shipping is indeed delayed for a month, as the site says.

    Hello,

I have an Intel 5350 card. It's "Engineering Sample". I tried to use on a T61 and T400 but I receive an error:1802. Even if I upgrade BIOS with last BIOS version from lenovo site.
Do you have any idea how to fix this?

I guess you need to change the EPROM of the card, or hack your bios. Try to google around, but since nobody has done it before I'm guessing it wont be easy.

I just ordered t400 with 5300 intel card because my area will never get WIMAX.
Did I make the right choice or does the 5350 have better reception or performance over the 5300 in terms of wireless G signals?

Okay, so yes the max receiving bandwidth of data is higher for the 5350 however its only useful if the signal that is being transmitted is of high data, in which my case, the G signals I receive will never reach the theoretical max transmitting data. So 5350 will have no performance gain over the 5300. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are correct. Even at high bandwidth, I doubt the 5350 will have a noticeable difference.

I think its important for everybody to understand that WiMAX is a new technology, that is only available in just one city, in the US. It will be at least 3 yrs. before wide spreed use will be available. By that time will you want to be using an old first generation card (5350) anyway?

I didn't find anything on Google related to this topic...
BIOS versions for T61, T400 and T500 are different that old ones (T4X and T60).

I purchased a 5350 from Hong Kong from Ebay. I got my card in about 4 weeks. You do need to pay attention to which card you are getting, as there are 2 versions of the 5350. One is compatible with only HP and IBM, the other is compatible with other makes. I am only going on what the sellers have stated on their sites.
    Good Luck!

Also, Verizon has 4G (WiMax) networks in both Seattle and Boston.
