I am looking at a laptop to use for college...mostly for typing papers etc..but also to do a little of photoshop...i was curious if the this memory addon can only work with vista?....i was planning on getting xp pro since reviews of vista on laptop say it can decrease battery life...but just wondering.

Yes it's an available option if you order Vista. Turbo Memory was designed to speed up the bloatware known as Windows Vista.
-
So as far as we know right now it will not work with xp pro even if i have to reformat and put xp on it...just curious if it would be compatible...i hate vista

Only Vista can take advantage of the turbo memory.
Besides, the Levono website says: "Selection of XP Professional operating system does not allow a configuration with Intel® Turbo Memory 1GB."
I'm going with Vista Ultimate + Intel Turbo Memory once the T61p is released in standard 14.1" screen size (widescreen = yuck). -
XP does not have the technology to take advantage of Turbo Memory. Vista has two builtin technologies designed to take advantage of an embedded flash card (turbo memory)--ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive.
TurboMemory can help if your system does not have enough RAM as windows will store the page file on the faster turbo memory rather than the hdd. It can also increase battery power by acting as a cache for the hard drive. Frequently used items will be stored in TurboMemory thus reducing the amount of time the hdd must be turned on and since TurboMemory has faster R/W than the hard drive your system will be more responsive too. -
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that it used the flash drive for paging was because of the theoretical 0 ms seek time. The flash drives actually have slower through put for larger files, but for quick seeks the flash drive is faster due to no seek time. It actually pages to both, and that is why you can yank the drive out in the middle of a page read/write, without causing a blue screen. I remeber reading somewhere that readyboost really never helped performance other than a few small tasks and actually hurt it in some applications. The intel turbo memory is probably way faster than a thumb drive

The Fire Snake Notebook Virtuoso
I am personally staying away from Turbo memory for now. The technology is in its infancy and I have not read about any great performance increases from it, actually in a few cases it has slowed things down. Not to mention that many BSODs have been attributed to its interaction with the rest of the system. I just feel it is added complexity that I don't need right now and would make any problems more difficult to diagnose. There is a 2nd version that should be coming out that might be better.

don't buy it if you ever think of using XP...I bought it for vista business, and now with XP, I wish I didn't.

for those who want ready boost type tech on winxp there is a program called eBoostr....not sure of its real life advantages but does the same thing...actually some reviews of the program do indicate a slight benchmark improvement
...here a link to a commenter on the lifehacker site who actually tested it on a thinkpad.
if anything it does save you some fragmentation and possibly a little power...that should go for both intel turbo memory and the winxp sd card way..
EDIT: i dont think eboostr works with intel turbo memory...*yet* -
Forget about Turbo Memory, it doesn't improve your performance.

Does turbo memory function the same as readyboost? If my laptop has a SD reader, can I just put in a SD card to serve the same function as turbo memory?
-
Don't get the Turbo Memory. It has caused more problems for people than its worth, frankly. If you have enough RAM and a fast enough hard drive, then Turbo Memory is rendered useless, for the most part.
Intel Turbo Memory with vista only?
