I'm wondering why you want to reformat? I assume perhaps you are doing a clean installation of Vista? I'm thinking the same thing, but I don't want to give up all the utilities that are included on my IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad.

if you have a copy of win xp, try boot the cd and it will have option of , delete partition, reinstalling windows and format the hd. Deleting the partition means you delete the whole thing with nothing in the hard drive.

The store used this x60 for a demo model for a couple weeks before I took it. Doesn't matter what browser I used, it continually freezes up. Sometimes takes forever for a program to load. At wifi points, the screen gos crazy, keeps refreshing itself, can't even lock on to a wireless signal at a cafe, last attempt took me like 1/2 hr to connect. This lap is no faster than my old R32. It has core duo 1.83GHz, 1.5GB Ram

It didnt come with any disks so I guess theres aseperate partition containing system info. Sorry, don't know too much about the software side of things. Yes i was thinking of a complete fresh reinstall. maybe there is a conflict somewhere or could be a hardware problem.

    hi,

I've never attempted a fresh reinstall of an OS on a laptop. But it should be the same as for a full sized desktop. Appart from the fact that thinkpad got a backup partition for all the thinkvantange soft. When you load up the pad, you should have an option to show up the lenovo utilities from restoring the original installtion.

But you should be carefull about your one as it could be a hardware fault. Try the software method first. I know that the wifi connection breaks time to time, specially in idle. At least that has been true for me so far.

    /off topic
I am looking for replacing my current wee 60Go HDD by a more spacious one (maybe an 100Go). And i am concerned about the back up partition. I would love to keep it while upgrading the HDD. If anyone has done this before. Drop me a line or pm me.
    /off topic.

    Regards.

    Tam

My experience with my old X40 may be of help to you. Twice I did a reformat and reinstall of the system software. The first time was to correct a hardware problem (which I wasn't able to correct with this procedure.) However, the reinstall went fine. The second time was to take any personal data off the computer as I sold it. I assume your computer has the Access IBM button which as I remember, starts the reformat procedure.

My replacement laptop is a X41 that I got a sweet deal on. However, it did come with a serious problem with the wireless connection ability. I tried everything I could think of before punting and calling IBM service. I got someone from Atlanta and it was the BEST computer service call experience I ever had. After doing the canned trouble shooting, we ended up deleting 4 or 5 files and then reinstalling later versions after downloading them. The whole tech call probably took an hour.

I would definitely recommend that you consider calling tech service.
