I'm trying to install a new HD in a Lenovo R60 9461 and the windows installer CD does not see the hard drive when I start the install process. I get an error telling me there is no HD present.

The drive I am trying to install is a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160 gig. I have also tried a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 with no success.

I do not have the original install CD as the laptop was purchased second hand, but I do have a valid Windows XP install CD.

Using Norton Ghost, I cloned the internal HD onto my replacement drive using an external HD case, but when I installed the new HD after cloning, I got an error message telling me there was no HD present.

The drive in the computer and the new HD are both SATA drives, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are you saying that the Lenovo R60 cannot use SATA drives? The drive in the computer has SATA on the label.

You have to switch your BIOS SATA to Compatibility before installing an OS.

You can follow the guide in my signature if you need help.

    Thanks for the help.

Now I need to make sure I have all the correct drivers and get ready to invest an afternoon in installing.

I had the same thing happen with an r60. XP can't recognize the HD because it's XP is not equipped with sata drivers. You need to go into the bios and disable sata native support. Then install xp and if you want a faster transfer rate between your motherboard and HD you need it get the correct sata driver for xp .
