Is it possible to (is there room) to install a regular 2.5" 16 GB SSD into a T400 in addition to a 7200RPM 160GB HD? I would of course install the OS on the SSD and have all files on the HD.

If you can live without the optical drive, this is possible. You will need the Ultrabay Slim SATA HDD Adapter II to mount the HDD in the optical bay.

More creative options (e.g. an internal Mini-PCI SSD or 34mm ExpressCard) are not supported as the ThinkPad BIOS does not allow booting from these types of devices (I checked in great detail).

One other thing. 16GB is cutting it pretty close if you intend to use Vista or 7 (especially if you want your apps on the SSD as well). I would recommend at least a 30GB SSD.

I'd recommend that you make sure you get a good SSD. DOn't just get one because it is cheap. Stick with a samsung, intel, mtron, or one of the indilinx drives (OCZ vertex).
