This guide explains how to install updated drivers for the ELAN track pad in the Lenovo Y510P. If your laptop uses a Synaptics track pad, do NOT install these drivers. Installing these drivers correctly is complicated but once you are done, you will finally have a track pad that works the way a track pad is supposed to work.

Step 1 - Go to the Control Panel, open up the Device Manager, double click on the Mice and other pointing devices, double click on the Lenovo pointing device and verify that you have an ELAN track pad installed. The Driver tab should show that your Driver Provider is ELAN.

    http://i.imgur.com/6iYlBpH.png

If you have an ELAN track pad then exit that window and download the appropriate drivers.

X64 Drivers for 64 bit Windows in 7 Zip EXE format
Download ELAN_11_8_19_3_x64.exe from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

X64 Drivers for 64 bit Windows in .7z Format
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/p0v1dc

X86 drivers for 32 bit Windows
Download ELAN_11_8_19_3_x86.exe from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

The exe files are in a 7 Zip self extracting format to minimize their size. Double click on the exe file to unzip these drivers and save the folder somewhere convenient like in your Downloads folder or on your Desktop.

Step 2 - In the Device Manager click once on Lenovo pointing device to highlight it and then select the Uninstall icon at the far right end.

    http://i.imgur.com/C1DOFBM.png

Step 3 - Check the box that says Delete the driver software for this device and then click OK.

    http://i.imgur.com/gMtaeAT.png

Step 4 - After you reboot, open up the Task Manager. In the Processes tab, highlight ETD Control Center and then click on the End Task button. Highlight Elan Service and push the End Task button again. Now you need to edit the Registry and you need to remove 3 folders where all of the previous ELAN settings are stored. If you do not delete these folders, some of the features in these new ELAN drivers will not work correctly. Do a Windows search for regedit and open the Registry Editor program.

    http://i.imgur.com/6KDkF6N.png

The easiest way to find the folders that need to be deleted is to let Registry Editor search for them. Select the top item, Computer, and then click on the Edit menu option and select Find... Type in Elantech, select the Keys option and then select the Match whole string only option. Now push the Find Next button.

Step 5 - At the bottom of the Registry Editor window it will tell you what folder it found. It should show Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech

That is the folder that you need to delete.

    http://i.imgur.com/mnCz17F.png

Right mouse click on the Elantech folder and select the Delete option. You can also highlight this folder and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Once this folder is deleted, press the F3 function key to find the next folder that needs to be deleted. The next folder should be Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elantech

Delete that folder using the same method.

Step 6 - Press F3 several more times until you get to this folder, Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Elantech

    http://i.imgur.com/CJfbXVX.png

Delete this folder and you are finished editing the registry so you can exit the Registry Editor program.

Now you need to open up the Windows file explorer and delete the C:\Program Files\Elantech folder. You have finished the difficult part of this installation and have finally removed all of the previous Lenovo track pad driver from your system. You are ready to begin installing a new ELAN driver for the track pad.

Step 7 - Open up the Device Manager again, go to Mice and other pointing devices, double click to open that and then highlight the PS/2 Compatible Mouse and select the Update Driver Software icon.

    http://i.imgur.com/RzSS8V5.png

Step 8 - At the bottom of the Update Driver Software screen click on Browse my computer for driver software

    http://i.imgur.com/BMXCuE5.png

Step 9 - At the bottom select let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

    http://i.imgur.com/yO4Joae.png

Step 10 - Now select the Have Disk... button.

    http://i.imgur.com/SZJ40j3.png

Step 11 - At the Install From Disk windows select the Browse... button.

    http://i.imgur.com/X8UuZhL.png

Step 12 - At the Locate File window, navigate to where you unzipped the drivers you previously downloaded. If you are using Windows 64 bit then find the X64 folder and select the ETD Setup Infomation file and then press the Open button.

    http://i.imgur.com/9qPbD1P.png

Step 13 - At the Install From Disk window select OK.

    http://i.imgur.com/xL2XByr.png

Step 14 - Now you will be back at the Update Driver Software screen. Make sure that it is showing the correct ELAN PS/2_SMBus Port Input Device and push the Next button.

    http://i.imgur.com/cmFUqJQ.png

Step 15 - A screen will pop up that says Update Driver Warning. It is basically telling you that the drivers you are installing were not originally written specifically for the Lenovo Y510P but we already know that so click on the Yes button to proceed.

    http://i.imgur.com/Ygyy9cG.png

Step 16 - If everything went well you should see the Windows has successfully updated your driver software screen. Make sure this screen shows the correct driver.

    http://i.imgur.com/OqUtZpm.png

Step 17 - You will now be asked to reboot to finish the installation.

    http://i.imgur.com/1bgPGX8.png

Step 18 - Once you have rebooted, open up the Device Manager and make sure that you have installed the correct driver.

    http://i.imgur.com/W5F3fIW.png

Step 19 - At long last you can go to the Notification Area - System Tray and open up the new ELAN Control Center software. You will find an assortment of new features and items that you can adjust. The most important feature for the Y510P laptop is called Smart Area. This lets you set up a "dead area" over top of where the mouse buttons are so the cursor will not move when you are clicking the mouse buttons on the track pad.

    http://i.imgur.com/Us8zqey.png

The other new feature that I really like is the one finger Edge Scroll. If you followed this guide exactly, you should find enough options in this driver to get your track pad working exactly the way you like. These updated drivers have completely fixed the Lenovo Y510P track pad issues that I was having.

I am presently using the 11.8.20.3 drivers that LenBlazer found on the Softpedia site.

    http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/KE...Toshiba-Elantech-TouchPad-Driver-118203.shtml

There are a couple of registry tweaks needed so you can use the Lenovo GUI with the ELAN Toshiba driver. After you get the new driver installed, go in to the X64 folder of the driver that you downloaded and copy the file,

    ETDAniConf.exe

into your C:\Program Files\Elantech folder. This is the default user interface that Lenovo uses. You can then run this program to access some more track pad features.

If you would prefer to have this as your default theme then do a registry search for the Value UI_Theme.

This needs to be set to 7 to use the Toshiba theme and you can change this to 1 if you prefer the default looking Lenovo theme.

The only other thing I do not like about this driver is that by default, the Mouse Properties opens up when you double click on the System Tray icon but luckily, this can be fixed too. Change this from 1 to 0 and problem solved.

    Code:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\OtherSetting
    MustOpenMouseProperties = 0
Do another regedit search for MustOpenMouseProperties to make sure you get them all and change them all to 0.

After these minor registry mods, you will need to log off and then log back on for these changes to start working.

LenBlazer is working on a chart to compare what drivers have what features.

Re: Please help me with my New Y510. - Page 2 - Lenovo Community

The Y510P drivers on Lenovo's website from last August are a bad joke compared to these puppies. :)

cycro27 - If you run into any difficulties or if anything is not thoroughly explained, let me know. Perhaps I will create a script to help make it easier getting the old driver off of ones computer before installing the new ones.

You are a genius, thank you so much. Received my Lenovo Y510P only a couple of days ago and the pad was becoming self aware - leading me to assume Judgement Day was approaching..

This guide is great; get it bookmarked and really follow it step by step and make reference to the photos provided, as it is easy to stray. Made a couple attempts and finally the extensive properties were revealed in all their glory. Works 100 times better than previous, especially with the right tweaking, really recommend it. So good to have edge scrolling back.

Would be really appreciated to guide us in the right direction, as with the previous tutorial, if there is any additional features in the update.

With the update is it simply a case of updating the Toshiba Driver through the Device Manager with the new download? Or would you have to uninstall this Driver again and delete the registry to potentially reveal any new properties?

I can assure you your hard work will at least have one person following on bookmark ha!

Remarkable a Company could have so terribly overlooked and executed such an integral piece of software, especially for a high end laptop. Other than this I'm pretty happy with my Lenovo!

k.radz - If you have already done a clean install and you are using the 11.8.19.3 driver, it should be no problem upgrading to the 11.8.20.3 driver without having to delete anything in the registry. After you unzip the driver from Softpedia, you should be able to jump in at about Step 7 in the guide above and install this slightly newer driver over top of the 11.8.19.3 driver. After you get the new driver installed, go in to the X64 folder of the driver that you downloaded and copy the file,

    ETDAniConf.exe

into your C:\Program Files\Elantech folder. This is the default user interface that Lenovo uses. You can then run this program to access some more features. With a minor registry mod or two you can make this the default interface if you like. I will document a few more tricks like this when I have some more time for this project.

I originally posted about these drivers in the NBR Y510P forum but I got virtually zero feedback. After that I figured I better write up some sort of guide. The multi step install procedure is overly complicated but it is well worth taking the time to change to these drivers. It is hard to put into words just how much better this track pad is with these drivers. Thanks Toshiba.

Lenovo needs to give their head a shake. To ship a laptop with a crappy driver is one thing but to sit back for 9 months and do nothing about a problem tells me a lot about a manufacturer. ELAN writes the drivers. All Lenovo needs to do is test them and put them into a package so their customers can easily download and install them without having to go through the above procedure.

Did all this and have access to all tthe options now cheers! However my mouse still occasionally behaves eratically. I believe the issue which I just found out for me personally, is that when I set the smart area above the two click buttons on the touchpad (in order to prevent the movement of the cursor contaminating with the click of the mouse) the mouse cursor still moves beyond the smart area boundaries. I have checked the box preventing movement as well as clicking, but it's only the clicking that has been disabled beyond the box, and not the movement. It's only when I click the button that it seems to start going crazy.

Anyone else having this issue, or have any ideas how to overcome it? Maybe I have two conflicting options ticked that somehow overrides the smart area movement? Maybe I need to reinstall it? Maybe I need to take this laptop back lol

I finally got around to this. Thank you so much man, you don't even know how happy I am right now that I got a PERFECT touchpad on my y510p now. It's now even better than my old laptop touchpad that I was used to for 4-5 years. I love you for this man. YOU, are the only one that provided a perfect solution, and one that actually works with the y510p touchpad. Working driver and instructions. We need more people like you around here! I seriously gotta buy you a beer for this.

    Now I 100% love my y510p

unclewebb- Thanks for the write up on this! Really easy to follow. I installed the newer driver (11.8.20.3) but I'm having some issues with the touchpad, First, both the single finger and two finger scrolling functions are scrolling way too fast (more than a page at a time) even though I have their settings set to the lowest available option. Any idea what could be causing this? Some of the other functions just flat out don't work. For example, the three finger touch doesn't launch the program I designate in settings. Finally, extracting the zipped files left me with a bunch of applications and file folders in my Downloads folder. Can these be removed? Kind of annoying having them sit in there. Thanks is advance!

I have used the Y50 Elan Track Pad Drivers from the Lenovo website. Works better than the OEM Y510p track pad drivers.

roydok - Can you open up the Device Manager and show us what what version of the ELAN drivers that the Y50 is using? I am just curious. The 11.8.20.3 drivers probably have more features available but maybe Lenovo has finally seen the light. The ELAN drivers for the Y510P available from the Lenovo download site are crap.

Kpsmidt - I have not been suing the 3 finger touch but I decided to enable it to see how it works. I had problems at first because I was doing some quick 3 finger touches on the track pad and nothing was starting up. The trick is you have to touch the pad with 3 fingers and then wait half a second with your fingers still touching the pad. Using this method, the app I selected starts up close to 100% of the time.

Did you switch to the ELAN GUI after installing these drivers. I love how the single finger Edge Scroll feature works. Here is how I have my track pad setup.

It sounds like you might have the Continuous Scroll option checked off. I just use a little bit of Inertia scroll so I can go up and down through web pages quickly without the pages taking off from top to bottom.

When unzipping things you have to be careful to make sure all of the files end up in a folder. After you install these drivers, I think you can take the whole download and delete it. The important parts are copied into Windows. About the only thing I kept was the ELAN GUI file called ETDAniConf.exe which is mentioned above.

    Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has tried these on the Y50 with success. I've tried a few ELAN drivers now but I'm having trouble scrolling in Unity3D's Monodevelop. It appears to be a bug with GTK applications where touchpad scrolling is very jerky (even the slightest scroll motion causes the editor to jump 5-6 lines at a time) this makes it hard to keep track of your code and makes navigating long code a pain.

My hope is that maybe these drivers can at least give me the option to severely tone down how much it scrolls by until a fix can be made. Anyone who can confirm would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    N

    Hello,

thank you very much for the detailed guide..

I followed it and install it on my Lenovo z50-70.. I got edge scroll and all option, but having one problem, after installing it, the right-click and left-click buttons stop working.. Rest all works great, but buttons stop working.

Any help here? I'm getting really depressed because of this.. I'd appreciate your help and response,
    Regards
