I’m looking to buy the T61 online and modify it to my needs.
    T61 2.4 Ghz
    nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M
    3 GB Ram
    100 GB 7200 RPM
PC Card & Express Card slot
Only I’m not convinced that Vista is the right way for this moment.
But if you buy the T61 with XP you can’t have the “1 Gb intel Turbo memory”.
I know that upgrading RAM is not a problem as I’m not unfamiliar with laptops but is it possible to install the Turbo Memory card later when I like to change to Vista.
Or can expect more problems when the time comes.

The Turbo Memory module is just a mini PCI-e card, so you can do it yourself ;)

Is that right? I read somewhere that it was built right onto the motherboard.

Why not buy the T61 with vista (so you can get the turbo since you say it doesn't come with xp) and then just load up XP in it yourself?

You can get Turbo Memory module as an external card... but the interface is slower

Is it even possible to buy the Turbo Memory cards separately? If you can, I don't see it being much of a problem to install it. As jcv said, it's just a mini pci-e card.

Well, these specs look pretty much like an overkill.
Try filling the FAQ and posting it in the "What notebook should I buy?" section.

Eventually, maybe, but I'm fairly certain jcv is right. You have to choose between Turbo Memory or WWAN, as both occupy the same Mini PCI-e slot. Lenovo estimates the flash memory will wear out after about five years, so ideally, I think it was designed to be replacable.

What makes you think Vista is not the way to go right now?

vista isnt the way to go because every microsoft OS that has come out imho has sucked for the first year before service pack 1 has come out.

can you buy the turbo memory anywhere?
i didn't get it, as i mostly use linux
i'd like the option to have it later, when it's actually useful

from the research i've done, TurboMemory will only help out if you use Vista, it runs off of the ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive functions built in to Vista. XP doesnt have either of those two, so only invest in the turbomemory if you are planning to use Vista.

Were you able to get this to work, lowspeed? I'm worried that there will be a BIOS lock like there is for Mini-PCI WiFi and WWAN cards.

FWIW, I discovered recently that there is more than one turbo memory card. For instance the Asus G1S requires a mini?? turbo memory card because the other one is too big to fit.

I have no idea... frankly i wouldn't recommend getting one... the one T61 that had it BSOD all the time. And i couldn't notice any gain in performance or battery.
