    Unclewai,

I posted a semi full install for XP. It took me three tries to get it right. If you care to check it out, it's here.

Have you checked into devmgmt.msc to see any of the chipset drivers aren't being installed properly? Have you downloaded all the ThinkVantage Power controllers (I believe them to be suspect to some of my shutdown problems during my second install)?

To answer your question, yes. I have seen it go to a blue screen where I can still move the mouse but that is it. I can't bring up any programs, ctrl-alt-del does nothing. I have also seen it freeze on shutdown at the "windows is shutting down" screen. Hard power downs are the only thing that works.

If you try to close the cover, I bet the half moon icon does not come on and when it's opened it says "Preparing to standby".

If your T61 has the Intel AMT thing installed... its the PROBLEM... You gotta reinstall XP and NOT install the AMT drivers... Just disable the device...

    Hope this helps...

    Cheers,
    Nick

Almost all the drivers needed are on the lenovo website, except for turbo memory of course. Check Skint80's guide linked in his post above.

What are the Intel AMT drivers? I'm still really confused.

I was just going to follow the steps below to install XP sp2. Do you guys see anything wrong with any of the following?:

    1. Attach a diskette drive to your computer.
    2. Download Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver from the Web site and
extract the driver to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\IMSM and copy the driver to
    a diskette.
    3. To make sure that SATA AHCI is enabled, start the BIOS Setup
    Utility menu.
    4. Select Config.
    5. Select Serial ATA (SATA).
    6. Select AHCI.
    7. Change the startup sequence of your computer. Following the
instructions on the Startup menu in the BIOS Setup Utility, set
the CD-ROM drive to start first.
    8. Insert the CD for Windows XP into the CD or DVD drive, and restart
    the computer.
    9. To install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver first, press F6.
    10. When prompted, select S for Specify Additional Device.
    11. When prompted, insert the diskette that you created in step 2, and
    press Enter.
    12. - If your system has Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
Select Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M),
    and press Enter.
    - If your system has Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
Select Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M/DH),
    and press Enter.
    13. To continue the installation, press Enter again. Leave the
diskette in the drive until the next reboot; the software may
need to be copied from the diskette again when the files are
    copied during setup.
    14. Follow the instruction to complete the OS installation.

    Akatz,

Just reference the guide I posted above. You do not need AMT. If you needed AMT, someone from IT at your company would have handed you a preloaded laptop :)

I have tried the method above that you're referencing from the 82081 GHM drivers, just set the controller to compatibility mode in the bios, install and follow the later part of the directions. You just need to run the install.cmd file in the prepare directory.

    Good luck.

    Unclewai,

I had the same problem where Shutdown and Standby would not complete. It turns out that the issue is related to the integrated camera on teh t61. The last update that resolved the issue for me was the windows XP update
    osx052us.exe from the lenovo site:
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68107
Please note the following description for the fix in the page referred to by the URL above:
"A Windows XP-based computer with the USB camera attached stops responding during standby or hibernation operation or when you try to use the Shut Down command."

My T61p should be here any week now.

I'm kind of hesitant doing a clean install on my new laptop when it comes in. I have never done a clean install on a laptop before. So many new terminology about setting up the bios and chipset, etc etc.. It seems waaaay more complicated then doing a clean install on a PC.

I've done it multiple times on a PC.

Don't know if I should even attempt to try it on my new T61p. :(

I had the same problem on a new R61 and this hotfix took care of it. Thanks!
