I purchased a T61 about a week ago with just 1GB pre-installed. Now I'm deciding between adding one more gig myself or buying 2 x 2 GBs for a total of 4 GB. I downgraded Vista to the XP Pro option when I placed my order for the T61.

I plan to use the laptop to surf the Internet, word-processing, viewing photos and using Photoshop, and I'll be taking a computer science course. Since I won't be playing games, should I go with just adding 1 more gig of RAM or installing 4? Adding 1 gig is more cost-effective IMO cause I don't believe what I do necessitates 4 gigs, and XP Pro only recognizes like 3.5 GB.

What about just adding another 2 GB stick to make it 3 GB in total? You can always get the second 2 GB stick if you ever need to go 4 GB. The kit is not that much cheaper than buying the sticks separately.

I would just leave it at 1GB

Hmm, I thought about that, but there's a deal on newegg in which 1 GB of RAM goes for about $10 including shipping after rebate. 2 gigs of RAM go for about $40, so I'm trying to save some money.

$40-$10 = $30. Saving $30 is small beer compared to any potential benefit you might get.

I agree with gaia, the 3 GB performance gain is quite good over 1 GB or 2 GB, especially if you've the Intel X3100 IGP instead of the Nvidia GPU model, and it's quite enough for the tasks that you'll be doing.
