    Hi.

I'm wondering if it's possible to do a clean install of Windows XP on my T510?

I would like as little of Lenovo's bloat as possible, the freshest possible XP install I can get.

    Is this doable?

While, it is doable, i would advise you to stick with Windows 7 instead, unless you have a pressing needs for certain features of Win XP. I thought i was a Win XP kind of guy, but after using Win 7 for a couple of months, i find it to be far more stable and user friendly than the Win XP OS.

It's possible to put Windows XP on the T510 but you'll need to put a bit of work in however:

    - Go to the BIOS and set the SATA mode to "Compatibility" not "AHCI".

    - Download the graphics drivers, wireless/ethernet driver and Lenovo System Update and store them on a USB stick, so you can get the rest of the drivers via the internet.

    - Copy your Windows XP CD contents on to the hard drive. If the disc is not updated to SP3 I strongly advise to download the service pack for security reasons.

    - Download Intel RST drivers and extract them to the hard drive. You need this otherwise XP has a problem of finding your SATA drives to install with!

    - Download nLite and have a blank disc ready. Slipstream SP3 (if the disc is not updated with SP3 otherwise ignore this) and integrate the Intel RST SATA drivers. You can toggle the installation process by entering the product key, set regional preferences etc. Then burn the CD-R and label it, this will be your new master XP disc for the T510.

    - Restart the T510 and with the ThinkPad logo on press F12. Insert the disc in and select the DVD/CD-ROM drive to start the install. This may take an hour.

    - Once done, install the drivers, antivirus, apps and new Windows Updates on the system.

With Windows 7 only the last two steps apply which just shows how far the OS has progressed since the XP days. I still use XP on my R61e and it is zippy, but on an everyday basis I do like using Windows 7 x64 on my T61 as it is aesthetically pleasing to use.
