I was just thinking of Lenovo's convoluted naming scheme in the new i series thread, and thought it might be fun to come up with your own dream Thinkpad system. It would be pretty neat if Lenovo let you mix and match any of their prefixes/suffixes to come up with your own system. If you could make one what fictional Thinkpad would it be?

    Nomenclature: SL/L/T/W/X + 1/2/3/4/5/7 + 00/01/10 + s/e/i/t

W401st for me: A 14 inch workstation in a thin convertible tablet chassis.

Exactly what I have now, but with HDMI out instead of the 3rd USB or Modem (I need to keep the VGA as well). It would also be neat, but by no means required, if I could have a 1.8" SSD bay in place of the ExpressCard slot + the normal 2.5" HDD bay (allow for hybrid storage on the x200).

The perfect notebook for me would be a 14" SXGA+ resolution with an IPS screen or something similar. It's the ideal blend of size/weight, performance and portability, at least for me anyway.

14" with MXM3b GPU (+intel integrated for battery life) and quad i7 + 6hr battery life.

Yes it would be hot, I don't care.

For me: the X200s with a 12 inch screen that is the same as the small Samsung NC10... a faster ULV CPU, standard 500 GB HDD, and yes all possible ports. Maybe a small thing but I would like the X200F (Fantasy) to have the power and ethernet connections at the back. I don'tneed a full size keyboard, I can type on a 90% one just as easily, that way they could minimize the really ugly bezel and make the X200F even smaller and lighter, so it would weigh with a 9 cell batery what it now weighs with a 6 cell. oh and before I forget 2 speakers instead of one please and of slightly better quality.

My dream machine would be an X200 with a 13" screen - no optical drive and same form factor. Otherwise, everything would be the same as my sig. I can't overstate how much I love this computer. I was pleased with my old T61s, but this thing is just about perfect.

W401st it is! Though two things: current 14" machines have pretty pathetic workstation cards in them ATM and tablets are generally thicker than their normal counterparts (even more so than their s counterparts!) but I hope the s negates the extra thickness that is brought about by the t :p

I would like a DVI to replace AVI port on T500/T510 + IPS screen.

With all the clamouring on these boards, you wouldn't think so many people were so satisfied with their systems... Such pedestrian dreams people :)

ZaZ: T400q (q for square...) A form factor that is no longer made, though I have to agree, I would have been very pleased if they made an updated 4:3 14 inch t6xp w/ IPS.

Moral Hazard: W400p (we'll bring back the p moniker for even heftier and swappable graphics adapters)

Perfection Seeker: X210 with no bezel.

Spesler: X310 with no optical drive? Though I suspect might also want a thinner bezel.

Sounds like Lenovo have most of the bases covered. People want smaller workstations but other than that just thinner bezels across the board. That said, just to add another permutation: I think an X110ti--an eleven inch convertible i3 tablet would be quite popular as well.

For me dream Lenovo would be a W410s (s would be like T410s)

    • 14" screen 16:10 1440x900, AFFS+ or better
    • processor Core i7 Mobile quad-core with integrated graphics
    • four DDR3 ram slots
    • new nVidia Fermi graphics cards
    • with 256bit bus and 1GB of memory
    • support for switchable graphics
    • No optical drive, instead it would support two 2.5" HDD on SATA3 interface
you would get a option to buy ultrabase (like it has x200) and you could add optical drive another HDD and also "slice battery"

because it wouldn't have optical drive it would have more space for heatpipes and copper to cool CPU/GPU :) and fan could be a bit bigger and quieter

to protect its components it would have top and bottom magnesium roll cage and to cover magnesium it would use Lenovo 2nd generation roll cage with rubberized fell

P.S.: it could use 16:3 (totaly new ratio :D ) with resolution of 1600x1050 it would be a mix of 4:3 and 16:9 (it would have more space for more ports though)

For me it'd be a cross between the slim shell of the idepads with the rugged nature of the thinkpads. Aluminum/magnesium shell, or plastic with a matte finish. Black.

    • 14" with 1600x900, 15" with 1920x1200
    • core i5 or arrendale i7 for switchable graphics
    • four DDR3 ram slots
    • ati 5 series gpu, MXM compatible
    • blu ray writer
    • one normal hdd bay and a smaller one for an ssd
    • backlit keyboard, maybe customizable color scheme, dont worry it wont have leds all over it like an alienware or something :D

Keep it slim and sexy, but professional looking.

Take the W710ds and eighty-six the Color Sensor & Digitizer to make room for a pair of Mobility HD5870 running CF.

Then change the ThinkPad logo to ThinkPwnd.

    EDIT: Oh yeah....and a 17.3" 16:9 primary screen with a 2048x1152 resolution. ;þ

    my dreampad: by importance
dell precision led backlit screen or pre-unibody matte macbook screen
Basically a t400s form factor with ati 4650 or ati 55xx graphics + intel integrated
    good ubuntu support
5-6 hrs battery life wlan on
    usb 3.0
    hdmi

alternatively, lenovo could make a 10 in. "intimate device" w/
linux/andriod os, multitasking, webcam, stylus, matte screen, black rubberized industrial build
    and call it the thinktab

Id love to have either W4xx with 1600x900 screen, switchable graphics, blu ray, 4 pounds or less, 6h of real life usage or more, ThinkPad durability,
    OR
X2xx/X3xx with 1280x800/1600x900 resolution, dvd/blu ray, 8h of battery life or more, powerfull one just like X200 is, but with touchpad :D
So far closest one imo is Elitebook 8440w, but thats really expensive one. So no thinkpad suiting my wishes for 100% atm :D But it looks like upcoming x201 could fulfill my needs, lack of ODD isnt a problem for 12" imo.

under 1 inch, intel + nvidia 9600gt or faster graphics, i7 culv processor. 1680x1050 or 1600x900 (even 1920x1080, 1920x1200) 14" RGBLED with LED Backlit display. backlit keyboard not a shine in face led lol.
sata 6gb/s (hybrid 10gb ssd + HDD would be nice)
slot loading optical drive? blu-ray/dvd combo.
    firewire 800/400, usb 3.0
    8 hour battery life... lol
    amplified wifi antenna
additional ARM CPU based system on chip (512mb ram, 1ghz proc) for quick linux boot and use as tablet/netbook. (bazillion hour battery life for this) also with quick switch.

oh and the roll cage, with equal or better build quality than t61.
    LOL

    T310s
    Scaled down T400s/T410s chassis.
13.3 inch 1440x900 LCD with switchable graphics.
At least mid-range discrete video capability. People who want discrete options aren't interested in low end "discrete" GPUs.
Easy access panel for miniPCI and DIMMs. (similar to the Dell E6400 or T400)
Only need to remove keyboard to gain full access to the CPU.
    T400s keyboard and touchpad.
    Ditch the optical drive.

A cross between the x301 and x200s with some additional improvements:
    13.3" IPS high-res screen (1440x900 or higher)
    webcam, WWAN-ready
    2.5" hard disk
    no optical drive
    multitouch touchpad
    DisplayPort with audio support
    USB 3.0
    always-on USB port
    ExpressCard slot

Easy: My custom ThinkPad would be the X100e with dual-core low voltage AMD processor and switchable ATI IGP/discrete ATI GPU. Essentially a budget ultraportable ThinkPad version of the Alienware M11x. It would provide the performance needed for video editing on the road (or playing games during free time) and still offer reasonable battery life (thanks to switchable graphics) if I just need 6+ hours of battery life on a business flight.

I wouldn't change anything about my t61p except the weight and battery life. The weight needs to be halved and the battery life connected to the net needs doubling.

You'll be able to get most of that if Lenovo doesn't take forever to refresh to 45nm Neo x2 w/HD4500 IGP.

The discrete GPU might require you to build your own ViDock though. ;)
