Would it possible for those of us who already have W500 / T500's to buy the screen and install it ourselves?
-
if the inverter matches (and Lenovo hasn't assembled the screen in an overtly convoluted way), why not?
-
Will Lenovo be willing to sell the screens alone?

displays can be purchased through the IBM maintenance parts department but they tend to be $650+.
you're making a lot of assumptions here though. you're assuming an IPS display happens (which it may or may not), that it'll happen on the T500/W500 platform (which it may or may not), that it'll happen soon enough that it would be more cost-effective to keep your current machine instead of selling it to upgrade, and that the unannounced, speculative IPS machine won't come with a better processor for less money.
if i were you, i wouldn't worry so much about things which simply don't exist. if an IPS machine happens, it'll happen. if not, then there's absolutely no reason to set yourself up for disappointment. -
I'd have to agree, the chances of an IPS falling into our laps is small if any. If you really want one, there's T60s with it. They're still pretty good machines and the screen can't be beat.

The tablets have great (IPS/FFS) screens as well, however they are only 12" and SXGA+ (x61) or WXGA (x200) and lack the workstation graphics of a 'W' series.
-
I guess you could mechanically put everything there, which is quite expensive, and then there is this bios issue - it will not work if you don't get necessary bits tweaked in bios. Do you see how complicated this situation gets ?
-
Well, there was that guy that got a X61 Tablet screen working in a T61s with a hacked BIOS

Very impressive, Erik.
Just to chime in on this overall subject . . .
Over the last five years, I have concluded that all my computers were fast enough, had enough memory, and enough hard drive space. (My current desktop 500 GB hard drive is about five times larger than I will ever use).
So, at least for desktops, my meager expenditures have gone into the "human interface" peripherals: video card upgrade, backlit keyboards, bigger LCDs, 5.1 speakers, etc.
Would I pay more for a better LCD screen on my next notebook ? Absolutely !
And I would appreciate a better screen on smaller notebooks (13.3 or 14.1 inch).
If Lenovo came out with a 15.4" WUXGA LED / IPS Screen...
