A few days ago, my brother's semi-new ideapad slid off a couch and landed on the carpeted floor below, sustaining some major screen damage as a result. The fall was a little less than 1.5 feet and the laptop was open and turned on at the time.
edit - Also, the laptop landed on its base, right side up. The screen did not actually come into direct contact with anything during the fall.

The screen now has a 3-inch-wide black strip running vertically through the center of the screen. The rest of the screen is stuck on a scrambled mess of colors and no longer changes.

I was rather surprised by how severe the damage was for such a minor fall. Is this typical for ideapads, or do you think theres a chance my brother's particular laptop was assembled poorly?

Also, when we took the laptop to a local repair place, the estimate for a screen estimate was $400-500. Does this sound accurate considering the laptop only cost around $700 to begin with?

What model of the Ideapads is it? The estimate of screen repair costs more than a new S10

Hard to say if it's just an unfortunate individual case or more than that since the Ideapads are so new and there aren't many similar cases reported, but I don't think the screen should be so easily damaged in such degrees.
