My wife needs a PC for school and I have no experience with any Lenovo's other than the standard Thinkpad line. So, not having had hands on with the Edge or Ideapad, I'm looking for the best choice for her. Good keyboard is a must, as she will be typing ALOT. No video editing or anything like that. Just a good, solid, capable machine. Looking at the Edge 15" and the Ideapad Z560 which I can get refurb for under $500. Thanks.

the keyboards on the g I think are the same ones as the z line. So they are terrible to say the least. They are better by a larger amount if you compare then to asus, hp or others, go for the edge, they have a good keyboard, albeit a non traditional one from the thinkpad point of view.

i wouldn't get any of the current edge laptop over the size of 13 inch.

If u can wait a bit for sandy bridge fix, the new 14" edge looks very promising (the E420). Keyboard on edge is different than regular thinkpad, but it is still far better than most other consumer's.

I cannot make a model recommendation, but if interested in the main thinkpad line you should check out the ibm certified used laptop page, as well as the lenovo outlet for deals on models at the $500 price point (T400).

I would buy the Edge. It's a ThinkPad - (not the true one as so many say on here! But then if you don't need the extras; why pay?) But at least the quality will be good for the price and it will meet your needs.
Happy ThinkPad-ing! -
Hmm, is the Edge a step down from the SL-series? I've owned an SL-500 and an x-series tablet. The SL series just feels like a regular consumer laptop with thinkpad software + slightly better keyboard.
I personally would go with an used t-series. -
Good keyboard starts and ends with thinkpads and not edge. Check out SL or L series if you don't want to get her a T.
L & SL are almost same except L costs more, allows high end processors, docking station connector, DisplayPort instead of HDMI on SL, and Matte screen instean of glossy - both have no thhinklight for use at nightime. -

If you like thinkpad KB you won't like Edge I tried one, sucked. Not as bad as HP elites but still bad. Just my opinion of course.

My wife would not allow a used laptop in her bag. Something about some women that can't handle used and has to be NEW. Not sure if your wife is the same, but the refurbs and used is out for her.
My wife is waiting for the x120e. Close to the same $500.00 price point (cross the fingers) and new. If price is not there, shes got her eyes on a HP dm1z. She's hacking on a old acer 1410 now, so either will be a nice upgrade for her.
If your wife likes to destroy them. The Panasonic W8 is on sale today for $409.00 shipped. This would be my choice for her and a very nice deal on a portable. My wife said maybe (which I think means no), Oh well, if interested USE coupon code: TBW8F&F to make it $409.00 or less shipped.

Does it really matter that some of the models don't have the ThinkLight? Think if your wife will need this or not - only the T, X, and one other model has it I believe.
I wouldn't buy a used ThinkPad just for the sake of getting the T series! I ordered the L412 as it was +200 cheaper for it than the T series and far cheaper than the equivilent Dell. I'd suggest this one too as I have only heard excellent things for it! I'll post a review once I get it. -

I would seriously wait for the e420s, those would have the looks that your wife would want, and the good keyboard.

I have used Edge and SL/L series, and their keyboards are pretty much the same. SL/L series are nowhere in the league of the T series. -
I would get the edge if she type alot. They take time to make sure that the keyboard is similar to those of classic thinkpad.
Ideapad or Edge?
