I heard Lenovo puts a lot of bloatware on the Y40/Y50 ideapads. How much space are we talking about as I am looking at the 256 GB SSD? Like between Win8.1 and the bloatware how full is the harddrive upon initial bootup?

Also, what programs would you delete, which ones would you keep?

Unless its a Clevo or an Alienware (Any others? I don't think so) the first thing I'm gonna be doing to a brand new PC are reformatting the system to get rid of ALL bloatware.

Are you going to qualify your answer, by telling the OP to make sure he creates the recovery media, before he blows away the existing system? Or are you going to spend the time, to help the user when he loses all the Lenovo funtions, and the One Key Recovery, by "reformatting"? :rolleyes2:

This comment does not answer the OPs question. Have you actually measured how much space is used up by what "you consider bloatware" on a Y50, especially since you have a Y500?

Look people, I'm NOT trying to be snarky here. I think the OP has a reasonable question. Exactly how much space is used by the various Lenovo applications on a new Y40/Y50? Can anybody, who OWNS a Y40/Y50, please list, and post the size, of all the individual Lenovo apps? It's a pretty basic operation. Just go to your programs folder, and click on the properties of any app you consider "bloatware", and list the size of the folder. When done, add them all up, and post the individual app name, and size in this thread.

Then, we can have an intelligent "discussion", about which Lenovo apps are bloat, and which are needed.

Couldn't agree more with your post. I would also add that typically the new Lenovo laptops come with at least 750GB hard-disk (mostly 1TB) and I am fairly certain ALL Lenovo apps don't take more than a couple GB's. So what you should really look for is the list of running processes as well as the list of apps that start automatically when you log into windows.

To be honest, there isn't a single laptop which I didn't format immediately on the first day. I'll just call that a habit as I like to know EXACTLY what has been installed even if it takes me an hour or two to download driver and required apps from the manufacturer's website. The only exception would've been my alienware but which I still formatted as I bought a separate SSD for it.

I don't own a Y50, because my three years old Y470, is still running like new. I never deleted any of the Lenovo programs, or as some call it "bloatware". Experienced system administrators, know how to effectively manage their machines, without having to employ the nuclear option. That's just MAD! (Mutual Assured Destruction) I only have certain Lenovo APPs running in my start menu. Still, using the Boot Optimizer on my 7200RPM HD, under Win 7 Home OS, I maintain a cold boot time of under 30 Seconds. Of course I run disk optimization, and De-fragmentation, once a week. I also keep my services running up to par, by knowing which services can be put into Manual, and which can be run Automatic (Delayed Start) mode.

Here's a sample of what the OP needs. This picture is my Y470, and these are all the Lenovo APPs I still maintain. Perhaps some Y40/Y50 user can post a similar picture, so the OP has a better idea on what's included fresh out of the box.

    APPS.PNG

That's only 1,679.92 MBs of what some my call bloatware. Hell, I have a 2 hour Arnim Van Buuren concert video, that takes up 5 times that space at 9.72 GB (10,447,249,408 bytes)! Some Armin hater could call him out as bloat. :D

The one, and only one application, that I deleted as bloatware was the McAfee software trial, because I use MS Defender + MBAM.

Yes there is a lot of bloatware. Honestly, it takes probably an initial 30 minutes of setup to de-bloat the whole thing just as long as you keep the drivers there and after that its perfect.
