Thanks a lot! Legacy support will only affect the controller to which that nng (or whatever the hell it is called) drive is hooked up to, correct? The other drive controller will be in AHCI mode? I appreciate all the tips.

In Canada, Lenovo isn't shipping the 510p's until June 17 but I just want to be ready and, if necessary, cancel the order if it isn't going to suit my needs. I'm wanting this notebook for work and gaming a d this seems like the best balance I have found so far when it comes to raw performance, battery life, and ease of mobility. It is replacing an Asus G73jh (play notebook) and a mid-2010 17" MacBook Pro. :)

With the coupon deal I am getting the notebook and 2 yrs accidental damage warranty for $1200 - no other notebook I could find currently matches that deal. I was also getting tired of niggly bugs in every Asus notebook I have ever purchased. Hopefully the build quality of the 510p is not a disappointment.

Build quality of the Lenovo is no better, if not worse. How do I know? I owned a G73Jh for two years. Thing was heavy as a sack of potatoes but very well-built. Can't say the same for the Y500. Just way too many wide gaps where the panels fit together and overall fit and finish is not as good, not to mention the super flimsy and glossy display bezel. Funny thing is even though the ASUS had the worst touchpad I've ever used by far and I never could get it to work in 2 years of owning it, the one on the Lenovo is not much better.

There are at least two people who have claimed to own this laptop and neither of them seem to be able to update us on battery life. This is the subject I am most curious about. Once I get enough posts, I'll PM Sonu but I don't plan on buying this laptop until someone can tell me something about its battery performance, because the Clevo P151SM has better (not SLI) graphics and Optimus, so hopefully better battery. The only thing this has on it is a nicer look, backlit keyboard, and about .8 lbs lighter.

Sonu I would be extremely grateful to receive that rep's information if you're still passing it along. Email is [email protected]. Thanks so much, would really help a poor college student stretch the budget.

I'm really curious about this too. Is there a particular reason Lenovo is not shipping Optimus? The option to leave the plug for 5-6 hours without high tier graphics would have been appreciated. I agree completely with the statements on the Y510p looking really nice for the part. The red backlight looks pretty awesome.

    TheSonu,

It'd be much appreciated if you could pass on the rep's information. I already placed an order for the laptop but hopefully he'll help me out and save me a few bucks! You've been so helpful to so many people, thank you for that! My junk e-mail is [email protected]

My friend had his model from Newegg come in yesterday. He's reselling it so I was able to snap a few comparison pictures with my Y500 but I wasn't able to boot it. I cleared up a couple rumors. The Y510p screen is in fact matte but it is not thinner and the weight is practically the same. The connections are 100% identical to the Y500, so the 6 in 1 card reader on Lenovo's website is claiming is also false. Really, the only difference in the models is the screen, model number and the sticker they used for the Haswell chip - otherwise I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Sorry, a couple images are cropped for privacy - damn my glossy screen! :) Y510p is on the left if you couldn't tell

So with the 24GB caching drive I can tell you how it works with the Y400. There is a program used, its not the Intel one, but some Rapid storage something or other. You can remove that program. Then use the disk manager to reformat the 24GB drive so it show up as a D: drive or something. Or if you do a clean install you can either install that program and it will find the drive and make it a cache drive or you can not install the program and format and use the drive as described above.

As far as Optimus I think it might be more than just having SLI but how they implemented SLI with the Ultrabay. Not sure but it seems the answer to why it doesn't have Optimus is the SLI but I have never heard a good explanation.

Thanks for the photos ! Now I will be definitely going for this sweet thing. Only thing holding me back was the glossy screen. & y510p is a little thinner, may not be detected by human eyes but vernier calipers might make out the difference. just like the tilt from the smartphone does it.

Why Do People make a big deal over

16GB SSD vs 24GB SSD in current version as if you can tell the difference. because some benchmark says its .0003 faster ?

Matte Screen ? Anyone know why Apple uses Glossy Displays ? 1080p They look brighter colors are better. I'll take glossy any day. I don't use my Laptop next to windows or outside often.

Why should I pay $400 more to get a Haswell CPU ?

I do wonder how ? they are getting 5 hours of battery life now on the 510 vs the 500 ?

To anyone who currently owns this and has cracked it open - is there room for another 2.5" drive anywhere? Anybody know of 3rd party drive bay replacements so that the DVD burner could be replaced and a second HD be installed? Thanks!

There was no tilt. The first one was on the table, so there's only .1 degree variance in favor of the y500 which is negligible. They are the same thickness

The problem is the length. The Y510p appears to only have a screw hole for 42mm long ssd(waiting on confirmation from youdontknowmeeh on this still). According to this site, there are four form factors mSATA or M.2 (NGFF) SSDs for industrial embedded systems? | Virtium Blog

So the higher capacity drives will likely not fit in the Y510p's slot. youdontknowmeeh did say the there was room for a longer chip, just no screw hole.

I facepalm when I read this everyday. The battery life is identical if not worse. The iGPU is disabled so uh yeah the Haswell "bonus battery" is nonexistent so... $400 more for a matte screen (more than $400 if you know how I haggle) and a 24gb cache drive which is like identical.. Doe anyone else think it's ridiculous? If you want a deal, call Lenovo and see if you can buy my repairs Y500 for like $700, lol.

Hi TheSonu, I ordered a loaded y510p and 3year warranty through Lenovo for 1500, and didn't know if the rep you worked with could do better? Would you be so kind as to forward me his contact information to my spam mail?
    [email protected]
Also the Lenovo site lists this Ultrabay SLI Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT720M GDDR5 2GB, can anyone confirm if it is truly a 720 or a 750? I saw conflicting reports on it in earlier postings.

    Thanks in advance

I agree it's not much of an upgrade from the previous model but the price difference isn't all that much. I bought my Y500 SLI GT750M with 16GB for $1150. The deal I got fr the Y510p was $1120 and it came with a 2 year warranty, case and mouse. So in my case, I'm saving $30, getting a matte screen, latest processor, big warranty and extras. This was a no brainer to me. Without the savings, it would have been a tougher choice.

I'm optimistic after seeing the 3Dmark11 scores, although I still can't figure out how the CPU made that much of a boost in the score. I'm sure the battery won't be 5 hours, but there are still other features in the processor upgrade that will make it more battery efficient and will make it slightly superior to the Y500.

I guess you could argue that now would be a good time to buy the Y500 at a cheaper price than the Y510p. That may be the case, but I'm wondering if they are discontinuing it. It's still up for sale but there's a 4+ week backorder. It still baffles me why they upgraded that model with the new graphics cards for < 4 weeks before releasing another model

    Hey! :hi2:

I'm new to the forum and though it would be a good idea to join NR to help out with the y510p that I should be getting soon (this Tuesday!!) from NewEgg. This was the best deal for me cuz my y500 when oredered would have shipped at the end of the month and was actually more expensive (so why not get an updated model cheaper :)) I will be open for questions you may have once I have this beast under my hands.

FYI, the model I got from newegg is easily upgradable to 16gb Ram as it contains a single 8gb ddr3 and 4gb card.

Thanks for the pictures. Looks like it will barely fit the 60mm form factor but then you have to deal with finding a way to screw it down. Hopefully they just have good enough options at the 42mm length. I can live with 120GB minimum.

as far as i'm concerned (as a customer) the y580 is unreplaced and can't be compared to the y500 (no optimus, less powerful graphics in single mode (they dont import SLi version in my country, they always get the cheaaaaaaaaaapest model so i want a laptop with GTX series as a standard) and finally, a Single powerful GPU, i dont see the use of two cards and their driver bugs..

Thanks - found it for much cheaper up here in the Great White North. :) Cheapest was $106 but still pretty dear for what you are getting. On the other hand, using it for the 1TB 5400 rpm drive as a data drive would be great. I haven't needed a DVD drive or burner in over a year.

Hey guys, I just created an account on here since I pulled the trigger and got the y510p after reading all the insights provided on this thread and wanted to say thanks. Will give any feedback once I get it!! Ship date is June 26th though.

In the meantime, I wanted to share for your information (or humor?) a chat log from Lenovo online support I had. His name is Ryan Warwick, and he did not get my sale. In fact, he hung up on me haha.

Please wait while we connect with you with a Lenovo Chat Representative.
All agents are currently busy. Please stand by.
You have been connected to _Ryan W.

_Ryan W: Thank you for choosing Lenovo sales chat. I’m Ryan, your sales chat representative. My rep id is 2900710106. What can I do for you today?
Tom: Hi, I'm a student. I'm interested in IdeaPad Y510p Laptop - Dual Graphics - 59370006 - Dusk Black. What is the student bundle or educational bundle?
_Ryan W: that machine is $1249 before tax
    _Ryan W: with student discount
_Ryan W: there is no educational bundle...but on the student site, you do get great pricing on accessories and warranties
Tom: there has never been an education bundle?
    _Ryan W: nope
Tom: So my classmate who got the "education bundle" just yesterday.
Tom: and this forum has multiple people saying that's exactly what they got
    Tom: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/720343-ideapad-y510p-14.html#post9225285
    Tom: all made up?
_Ryan W: people in forumns say a lot of things...we do not have any edcuational bundle deal
Tom: right.. so you're saying my friend who i just talked to, also made it up?
_Ryan W: yea that is what I am saying
_Ryan W: I work for the company
_Ryan W: we don't offer a bundle deal that gives you all those items...lower than the discounted coupon that saves you nearly $400 dollars off the list price
Tom: and I'm guessing if I told you that a sales rep quoted a $1,239.00 price, I would be making it up too?
_Ryan W: the educational price is $1249
    _Ryan W: not 1239
Tom: You work for the company, like you said, so you should be able to get me a $1,239 price if that option exists right?
_Ryan W: yea Tom I do there.....I am telling you that on our student discount site.....the price for that computer is $1249....not $1239
Tom: I'm trying to find someone who has my best interest in mind, and who isn't horrendous at sales so I can actually have a comfortable purchase experience.
_Ryan W: ohh i have your best interest in mind...but you have just talked about the price solely...I have told you what the price is for our educational discount, and yet you do not accept that ...I can't help you then...as I can't bring down price lower
Tom: no, you stated the price, then called an entire forum, my friend, and myself liars
Tom: then I told you someone on the phone quoted me $1,239. Instead you said, "the educational price is $1249"
Tom: hmm ok, now you're saying, "oooh I actually knew of a better price, but i thought you were just asking about the educational price"
    Tom: you think I'm dumb?
    _Ryan W: what's that again?
_Ryan W: I am telling you there is no educational bundle, I am not going to offer the machine for $1239...if you want the computer for $1239 , then contact the rep you spoke with originally...I cannot help you with that
Tom: I thought you worked for the company and knew everything you offered?
_Ryan W: yup I certainly do.....that is I know exactly what is offered on all our affinity and EPP sites, and all sales on our public sites....If another Rep tells he can bring the price down $10 past the sales price....then you should have ordered it if the price was good for you
Tom: so another rep may be able to do something you're not able to or not privy to?
_Ryan W: nope he/or she was probably trying to help you out because you were trying to get lower pricing, so they dropped the price to get the machine ordered for you
Tom: they can drop the price, but you can't right?
_Ryan W: nope Tom, I am not going to do that for you
Tom: oh, you can, but you won't?
    Tom: EXAMPLE OF BETTER SALES:
Tom: there was a forum thread about having accessories, as well as one of my classmates getting the same deal they are talking about. I would like a case or something thrown in, but somehow different sales reps know different hings.
_Chris S: Yes, I'm familiar with the thread you're referring to -- we do not honor that promotion unfortunately.
Tom: so it did exist, but not anymore?
_Chris S: Well it was something that the rep set up for that particular customer due to an issue not sure the exact details on it.
Tom: ah I see, thanks for the explanation.
Tom: but you're not able to get the $1239 for the laptop even?
_Chris S: One moment let me check -- that may be possible.
_Ryan W: yea he sits right beside me...why are you talking to two chat reps
_Ryan W: chris can help you out
    _Ryan W: goodbye
_Ryan W: actually, he can't do it for you either
    _Ryan W: sorry Tom
Thank you for contacting Lenovo. You may now close this window.
Your session has ended. You may now close this window.

I ended up getting the highest model at $1,239.00 with a different rep...it was the first price she quoted. I guess it wasn't impossible after all. Education Bundle is over though I'm pretty sure unless that one rep can still make it happen.

    You are a complete fool.
Never post a forum link, you just ruined it for the rest of us.
