Very, very, very good post. I haven't done a clean install on a new system in years. It's much better to stick with the OEM build, especially when it's a new chipset that isn't readily supported outside the OEM load.

These days a fresh install can cause more harm than good. Thank you for taking the time to articulate why.

    Cheers,

hey guys again ;) My Y510p (2gpu, 24gb ssd) is one week old but have some performance (?) issues. At sturtup it loads really slow sometimes and many times i need to restart it when windows is loading - same with shut down. There is only dark screen and notebook doesnt act. This performance issues , maybe I could call it freezes happen also in windows, when i start for example chrome and i need to wait couple of minutes till it really starts. Or when I start more applications and notebook doesnt work few minutes and then suddenly all start. I havent tried any games, so this is just startup/shutdown and ordinary work on notebook. Any suggestions? I uninstall all trash applications from factory like mcafee or so on.Or one example : notebook is off, i just start him, lenovo logo appears for few moments, sometimes for minutes, then just shows up black screen with cursor and thats all, no windows user menu or something like that. I have to switch it off by button hold and try it again.

Just clone the HDD and transfer to a 1 TB Samsung 840 EVO. All that sluggishness is solved!

I don't have the startup/shutdown issues, but have been experiencing periods of slowdown. Most of the time to the point of everything locking up for 30 seconds to a minute. When this happens, I notice that I'm at 100% disk usage in Task Manager. Once it drops back down, everything goes back to normal. I updated the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver and increased the pagefile size (someone on another forum suggested this) and all seems to be well so far. I only got to test this for a few hours though, so I'm not entirely sure yet.

Nothing personal, I decided to just remove a few programs instead. I needed someone to confirm that there could be problems if I did a fresh install. For anyone that is wondering, I removed McAfee, Nitro Pro 8, and the games program.

I used acronis 2013. I originally tried my 2012 version with plus pack but full Windows 8 support starts with 2013 so I had to upgrade. Create a boot USB using Acronis 2013 and boot from the USB and the clone should proceed smoothly.

Acronis 2013 will clone the entire disk to your ssd. See note above re: prior versions.

Emailed a Lenovo Support about my order being delayed about 3 days ago and I got an automated email saying someone will respond in 24 hours. Well It's been almost 4 days and there's still no response.

Does anyone know where I can check the status of my ticket?

Ok - I'm still missing a piece of the puzzle. At boot from USB, your old spinner HDD is still in the lenovo correct? So your "clone" goes where? Pls share the steps from using USB boot through cloning and replacing the HDD with SSD.

Either you replace your spinner with your SDD in the main bay (which is located under the casing) or you place the SSD in a caddy (which is in the ultrabay). I recommend placing the spinner in the caddy and the SSD in the main bay.

I got my Y510p this week, after using it for a couple of days there is some minor problem that I noticed:

1/ On startup, sometimes it will stuck on the Lenovo boot screen, I have to manually restart it.
2/ When shutting the laptop down, it wont turn off 100%. The screen is turned off but the LED power button and the backlit keyboard light stays on. I'll have to shut it down by holding the power button. I'm considering opening up a support case to resolve these issues. Just wonder if anybody has the same problem as me.

Also, did anyone try to install Ubuntu on this laptop? I want to switch to Ubuntu full time (no windows 8) but I'm not sure how to install it on this laptop since I'm not really familiar with UEFI boot setup. If you have done so, can you show me how to do this? thanks.

    1. Try waiting a bit. Sometimes the little rotating dots freeze, but they continue 3 seconds after. Ive never had startup issues on mine. And im using the OEM Windows 8, haven't done a clean install.

    2. Blame windows 8 for that. To try and cut poweroff times, microsoft made it so the screen turns itself off first, but the OS is still powering down in the background for like an extra 10 seconds afterwards, which is indicated by seeing your laptop's power LED on for like 10 seconds after the presumed "shutdown". Otherwise, if it doesnt shut down after like 10 seconds of seeing the screen blackout, try calling Lenovo, this might be a defect.

    3. To install an OS that is not Windows 8, power off the Laptop, press the side button, open the Bios, and disable Secure Boot and set the boot mode to Legacy. I haven't installed Linux on this laptop so i'm afraid i can't guide you on installing it.

I installed the original HDD into an external USB3 case and the 500GB SSD inside the Y510 as its replacement. I have the SLI version so no ultrabay for me.

    Hi jobine702

    1. When you say press the side button, which side button are you referring ?

    2. In addition, I also seems to have the wifi problem (automatically turn off) after I fresh install windows 7 on my own plextor SSD (I replace the 1TB default hard-drive into this) and then when it comes to the wireless lan (wifi) connection, I can install the driver without issues is that just whenever I happen to completely shut-down the machine, then the wifi connection would be turn off automatically itself and there is no way to turn it back on (tried disable and re-enable back but still the same). I would need to restart the machine again after that then only the wifi is turn back on. Any idea ? I cannot seem to PM you though :(

    1. The Novo button which is located behind the power Jack. Aka the Onekey Button.

    2. What drivers are you using? 15.6, 15.8 or 14.8?

Let the MicroSSD (if any) register the new startup files, it will eventually boot up a little faster.

The WLAN module is not Intel one. It is Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG

I get it from the Lenovo Official US Drivers page : http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035848

p/s: I am abit confuse with the Intel Proset Wireless ??? What does it do actually ? http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035847

How come majority of the Y510p user here using the Intel wireless WLAN module ? am i the only one that use the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG ?

Hey guys, long time lurker. I recently purchased the Lenovo Y510P off of Newegg, and the laptop is great, except for one kind of big issue. I don't have problems dropping wifi or picking it up for that matter, however with games like SWTOR and others, I tend to have huge lag spikes. They last only like 2-5 seconds, so it's enough to be a problem especially in multiplayer games. Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this? I remember reading something about bluetooth causing problems but I can't find the post anymore, so I'm hoping someone can help me.

So I just got my Y510P from Fry's with a matte screen, and I noticed that the back light is rather uneven. It is most noticeable on the top right and top left, when looking at a lighter colored picture or wallpaper. The top left and especially top right corners are noticeably darker than the rest of the screen and it is more noticeable when the screen brightness is about half way, but I'm not sure if I am just nit-picking here, or if I should be considering talking to Lenovo about it. On one hand, I can probably just deal with it, but when I spend $1200 on a computer, I want it to be near perfect. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

You don't need to perform 2 steps.

    Buy Acronis 2013.
Read the instructions on how to create the Acronis 2013 USB boot device
Create the Acronis USB boot stick on most any reliable USB memory stick.
Install the new 2.5" SSD into the Y510
Take original 1TB drive and install in external USB enclosure
Connect original drive and USB stick to Y510
    Boot from USB Stick
Follow onscreen Acronis 2013 instructions to clone disk, selecting the 1TB drive as the source and SSD as the Target/Destination
    Clone the drive.
When the clone is complete, shutdown, disconnect USB devices and reboot using the now cloned SSD.

    Cheers,

If you have already installed the standard 2.5" SSD and wish to use the 24GB M2 SSD as a storage device, go back into disk manager and delete the existing partition for the 24GB SSD. Then repartition it for windows and it should be assigned the next drive letter. Format it and you are ready.

I do. I already chatted with a salesperson. She said there's not much they could do, I just have to wait. Then gave me any accessory worth $50 for free. So I got a free mouse.

Would calling them make a difference?

Finally got my SSD installed and a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro. That was a lot more difficult than it had to be... lol.

Anyways, this thing is blazing fast now. Quite a big difference going from a 5400rpm HDD to a solid state drive!
