Hi guys, I just purchased a Y510P and it comes with the 1TB 8GB hybrid HDD. I've been noticing that the hard drive has been making some grinding sounds, sorta like sand or grit rubbing against something. It's especially louder when i'm moving the machine around while its in movement but I also hear it sometimes when the HDD is doing something intensive like windows update. Do you think the HDD is defective given this ? Running CrystalDiskInfo did not show any errors on the drive.

I've already asked Lenovo to send me a replacement but im wondering if it's something I should be concerned about. Longer term I'll probably replace it with a SSD drive. For anybody that has done it, is it a difficult process to change the HDD ?

Brilliant thanks Jobine, this makes me feel a lot more comfortable about doing the replacement, whether its for the SSD or the 1TB they're shipping me.

Also, can you confirm if your HDD makes any sanding/grity sounds when you attempt to move the machine while its' in the process of reading or writing ?

Mine does not make such noises, i'm afraid.

The hard drive is audible (it sadly is the only audible part of this laptop when on low load), but it sounds like a normal laptop hard drive, not like a grit.

This laptop is amazingly quiet once you replace the HDD. You will be amazed.

Changing the hard drive is very simple. Only the clips toward the rear hinges ever give me any trouble.

Changes the HDD to SSD or adding the M.2 SSD if you have the slot are simple tasks once the bottom case is off.

    Cheers,
