I'm going to purchase either one of these soon but I don't know which to pick.
The Y580 seems pretty nice but the dual sli gfx card for the Y500 is too hard to resist.

For you guys that were contemplating the Y500 or Y580, could you give me a little run down as to why you bought it over the other??

Also, I've read the issues such as touchpad stuff but I'll be purchasing the laptop in-person from a computer store and going to pre-check if there will be problems etc.

Also, how good are the GT650 or GT660?
How much FPS would I get for games such as Far Cry 3 on normal settings at 1920 x 1080?
And how long does the battery last? (Planning to use at a computer course at university)
Finally, whats the difference between ie. Y500 59351391 and the Y500 59356053? The specs look the same but the price is different o_O

Honestly, I didn't even look at the y580. I knew it was in the same league as the y500, but I just didn't appeal to me.
I preferred the dark black the y500 had, the red backlight and the design. The design makes it feel like you actually have a pretty slim laptop. Compared to the standar laptop design the y580 uses.
SLi also has better performance compared to the y580 gtx660. But this is only for games and applications which use SLi. I can however say most current games have SLi support. Far Cry 3 supports SLi, take a look at this list. I can't tell how much FPS you might get, if you're really interested after reading this, pm me and I might check it for you, if I can find the game anywhere.

The touchpad has been an issue at the start. However the current shipments of y500 should be delivered with Synaptic touchpads, these cause no problems what so ever. I have a synaptic and I've been using it 1 week without any problems.
The battery shouldn't really differ much. the y580 is said to have 5hours. I have managed to get 4 hours easily with low brightness, power saving modes and webbrowsing, youtube etc on my y500 SLi.

Last, the difference between those 2 you posted seems to be the graphics. The Y500 59351391 doesn't have the 2x 650m. The Y500 59356053 has SLi graphics, 2x 650m. However you might want to provide a link. I only found some Korean websites, don't know if this is right.

Here's my take on it. If you don't plan on getting the sLI version or the second 650m later on then go with the Y580. They are very similar but the Y580 gives you better battery life and very good performance. You should not make your decision based on the graphics chip because the 660m and 650m are the same chip running at different speeds. it can be argued that the 650m in the Y500 will outperform a 660m in the Y580 because the Y500 has a superior design (better cooling). I run my laptop at 1155/2555 while gaming and it is rock solid with temperatures never exceeding 80c. Cooking it with Furmark 1080p 15min benchmark got the temps up to 87c which is still very good considering how high I overclock the system. So, if you are a gamer, get the Y500. if you are a business dude that does occasional gaming then the Y580 is your best bet. As Artwork stated, battery life is very good on the Y500 even without Optimus enabled. I was almost able to get 2 movies out of it on a flight which is about 4 hours. I plan on getting another spare battery so I don't have to wait to land to finish a movie! ;)

Conclusion, can't go wrong with either one. I like the Y500 because of it's SLI capability and it looks really cool. I researched both machines when I made the decision. If I had to do it again, I'll still pick the Y500 but a Y500 with a Synaptics touchpad :p

haha no need to test the game out for me....... but you should play it! absolutely fantastic game. Moving to the point, I did feel like the design of the Y580 felt kinda fatter. I guess 4 hours is reasonable for such a powerful laptop. I didn't realise it was the graphics card difference fromt he serial codes haha. Checked the American website but it didn't have the serial codes so I was really confused ~_~

Thanks for your reply! Yea, I think purchasing a Y580 just for one slightly better gfx card will feel like a waste especially when I can add another beauty in! I heard the cooling system on both the laptops are a wonder and reading from your stats it seems pretty good! I am a heavy gamer and I do alot of stuff like rendering so I'm kinda excited for it. Just wondering where you'll be purchasing another battery from? and defintely will be purchasing the Y500 with the Synaptics touchpad :D
