Hello, im thinking of buying IBM T400 or IBM T61. As much as i looked into them t400 is better. What about gaming on both of them (what kind of games can i run on it).
I have a desktop pc in house with these specs:
2.4 ghz single core pentium 4
1gb ram
ati radeon 3500 512mb winXP
(I can run 2008 games almost maxed)
will the t400 run like it or slower? As much experience i have with laptops is like laptop with same specs as desktop will run like 3x worser than that desktop.

It depends on the configuration you get for either systems, but either one should be significantly quicker than your P4 desktop in terms of CPU, but I'm not sure about graphics since most of them come with integrated Intel GMA X3100 or 4500.

The T400 has either a sole Intel 4500MHD or the switchable graphics (Intel 4500MHD/ATI 3470HD combo). I have run Mirrors Edge on my T400 but have not run any other games. It ran okay but Mirrors Edge is a couple of years old just like the T400 and most certainly the T61 (one generation older than the T400) If OP is looking for a gaming laptop then I would not suggest the T400 or T61. You might be able to do the eGPU setup with the T400 but at the cost of that arrangement OP perhaps could buy a decent graphics card for his/her desktop and have some dollars left over. FYI the eGPU thread is located on this forum here if you are interested in reading more about the setup.
One thing people fail to remember is that ThinkPads are business machines. They are not engineered for gaming. My ThinkPads excel at school-related activities and are made for travel.
@gummpy. I would look into another segment of laptops designed for gaming. I would say that the T400 and T61 are simply not be cut out for current games by a long shot and would only leave you disappointed. Good luck -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Yes I would say depends on the spec of both. A T7300 T61 vs a T9600 T400, I'd take a T400 over a T61. Even a "high" spec T61 unless its Penryn, I'd take a T400 (guarenteed Penryn, cheaper 1066 FSB Core 2 Duo's). Only thing T61 has going for it is SXGA+ 4:3 screen over 1440x900 max resolution of T400 and parts are dirt cheap, though T400 is getting under 250.

Unless the price is significantly different, I would opt for a T400 over a T61. 1440x900 isn't too shabby of a resolution, although the T400 and T61 (14") screens were of rather poor quality in terms of contrast and viewing angle.
A T400 with discrete switchable graphics will play most modern games at low settings, with slightly older (3+ years) titles playing at medium-high. Not an enjoyable experience, to be sure. A T500 will be much more capable, if you're likewise limited in budget but are considering larger machines. -
The T400 will be a definite performance improvement over the T61, however if you're looking to game I'd highly advise you to look at a T500 with the discrete HD3650. While it is a bit larger(15.4" versus 14.1") you can get a higher-resolution display(up to 1680x1050) and the GPU will be almost twice as powerful as the HD3470 in the T400. While it won't handle the latest and greatest games at high settings with ease they will be playable; I've been able to run MW2 and Skyrim on my T500 enjoyably. The friend of mine I sold my old T400 to is starting to get disappointed in its gaming abilities, despite being a great system otherwise.
