I almost ordered an X40, but after seeing other posts in other makers forums about the Dothan chip arriving, didn't want to suffer buyer's remorse. Is there any word about IBM using the Dothan? Any opinions about whether the chip will improve the ultra-light performance? I haven't read that much about Dothan, and my goal is a very light machine for portability, not worried about graphics, and can use the optical drive in the base when needed. I would expect the newer machines to carry a premium, but will that also lower the price of the older chip machines? Any bits of wisdom would be appreciated.

Dothan won't make it into the ultra-lights for some time. The next upgrade you'll see is a PM 1.1, so don't worry too much about remorse.

It's too new to know for sure about reliability, but boy...are you sure going to the other extreme. Have you considered something in between like the Sony TR series and the Fujitsu P5000 series? They offer a little more functionality than the X40 and not much more weight.

Do you mind starting a new thread for the Fujitsu discussion in that forum?

I just thought I'd add some clarification for other readers (relavent to the topic): IBM plan to release the Dothan in the T42/T50 (name unknown at this point in time) series, somewhere close to the release of the Dothan itself (May 10).

The battery life is usually quoted with screen dimmed and wireless off. As for the screens, I've not yet seen the X40 in person.

There is zero indication that the T42 will have Dothan. Students that have pre-ordered already have even confirmed that it's Banias. I hope they're wrong though...

Hmmm. excellent question - since i have the same dilema right now -
I'm with the IBM ultralight for long (X21 currently) and enjoy it very much (i travel a lot, every Kg is meaningfull and wow.. this machine has suffered a lot ;)) - willing to make the tradeoff re. the HDD and the DVD etc.

Since it's time for upgrade - i've been checking the new X40 and the X31, and yes.. the X40 looks very promising (although for some reason our dealer tried to convience me to go for the X31??)

As i picked up the phone to call our company's dealer, i saw the new T42 model with the Dothan cpu - hmmm.. usually IBM does a "cross the lines" upgrades especially in new processors - so I stopped and wondered ... "is a new X41/X42 waiting around the corner?"

I've read Brian's answer "Dothan won't make it into the ultra-lights for some time" .. anything technical that prevents that? any idea of the time frame? (ssshhh.. any inside info from IBM?)

    Thnx
