are there any good ibm thinkpads below$800 that is wireless and can be used for web surfing, word (excel and powerpoint)???
are they good?
-
Unfortunately, I do not know of any IBM thinkpads below that price. IBM thinkpads usually have a solid build to them, and tend to be a bit more expensive.
-
The "budget" series of ThinkPads is the G Series, you won't find it for under $800 with Wi-Fi though. You could probably get a minimal configuration with Wi-Fi for a shade over $800, in my opinion if you want budget you're better off going with Dell, HP, Averatec or EMarchines to get more bang for the buck.

Figure on spending a few extra bucks for an 802.11b card.[ ] -
I just purchased a Thinkpad A22M used from the IBM Certified Used Equipment website. It came to $800 with a 14" screen, 30 gig hard drive and 128 megs, Win2k for the os and a one gig pentium II cpu. http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HelpDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1&subject=2576394)
So far it's been pretty cool, but I've never owned a laptop before. Included was a Lotus Suite disc that I haven't looked at (I have Office). If I read the gobblegook right on their website it has a 7 day "I hate it" return warranty, plus a limited warranty for 3 months. It may have been a little expensive compared to the low end hp & compaq units, but I like the feel of the IBM laptop from work, they just feel sturdier. Think about it, it's an option.

Yeah, most likely. []
Uhmmm ... and that should be a P3 cpu, above, not a P2...
I really like the feel of the IBM. The only thing I kept thinking while playing with the compaq and hp's in my $800 price range was "flimsy".
On the good side they didn't send the printed manuals, but they did send me a cheap Lexmark inkjet printer, new in the box. Guess that's a hint to print my own manuals.[]

Looking for value notebooks? Try Acer... they are fine, except case materials... look a little cheap, but are good inside...
-
If Acer could just upgrade that case, while maintaining low price, they would appeal to a much larger consumer base. Even add on $50 for a sturdier casing all together.

You are allright momo26! Don't know why those pundits in Taiwan are late to make the change, would get an important slice of the market... (well in Europe are nr one in sales already...)
-
Wow, number one in Europe? You'd think it would be a high-end market, the LGs, Samsungs, Panasonics and Sonys.
-
Strange indeed, but that's so... The figures don't lie...

You do realize that this thread is over 2 years old, right?

Haha, close to 2 and 2/3 actually. rleo25 seems to have dug it up, post #8. (Note the jump in dates).

Oh my!!! I was probably talking to a living death, well that was a halloween hangover hahaha... however the reply is still valid isn't it? Thanks for pointing out that timing detail, next time will be more careful....

No need, it is often good to bring back older posts instead of starting brand new ones for each topic. Utilize the search field on the top, right-hand side of the website.
