Well, when questions of ThinkPad quality come up, it can no longer be said that the IBM operations are essentially the same as before the Lenovo acquisition.

NY Times story: IBM moves some operations to China

I have nothing against China -- heck, my wife is Chinese -- but I think this could be cause for some concern on the part of American customers.

I do not have anything against China aswell, but I really hope this does not negatively affect the overall quality of ThinkPads.

This is really more about software and services though, and since Lenovo is based in Raleigh, North Carolina and call support for Lenovo products is in Atlanta it really doesn't affect ThinkPads or computer offerings much if at all. Well, in regards to consumers at least, it may have some effect on large business buyers that purchase hardware and software/service bundles I suppose.

I'm not too sure IBM has anything to do with the quality of thinkpads anymore.

When we order a new Thinkpad (T60, for instance) is it shipped directly to us from China or is the main assembly done in China and then those "base units" shipped to and stored in the US, where they are "customized" as we order them and then shipped to us from there? Just wondering, thanks!

Made in China - Shipped complete from China (spends a day or so in customs before final leg of journey to you)

Edit - for customer configured units anyway. I suspect pre-configured units may be stocked on this side of the pond

Maybe that explains the long delays I read about from when customers order them and when we receive them.

Some customizations are done here if possible - more RAM for example... Folks here open the sealed box, add the RAM, then reseal it. That is permissable because it's still a manufacturer sealed product.
