Well... I successfully nuked the x40 today. Installed winxp sp2 from the microsoft site (downloaded it full as opposed to the update as I want to install it on other computers) and it all worked fine up until I needed to reboot the computer.

Blue screen. Won't boot. All bad. Not even safe mode.

I'll have to rebuild it with that blue button shinanigans after I get some of my data off...

    sigh...

I knew I should have backed up beforehand :)

    Just a warning.

And yes... everything was up to date.

    BM.

Oh no, that just sucks :(

I'm kind of waiting for other people to take the first brave steps before I install SP2!

My ThinkPad T40 got a virus just the other day and was blue screening randomly. Using the system recovery software and recovered to a backup from 2 weeks ago and off I am again. Love that IBM software!

i read that the SP2 isn't all that polished yet. they say that you'd be much better off when it's available via automatic updates.

Yeah, I read that most people should wait for the automatic update which will have all the kinks ironed out of it.

Well... Backup my system this time with Rapid Restore Ultra 4.0 (what a great program!!!!) and reapplied the service pack 2.

    It worked!

I suspect it was my logonUI loader that made it all go bad. I didn't activate it this time. That's probably the only change I can think of - and in retrospect i should have disabled it the first time. I just didn't think it would crash as hard as it did.

Just to keep you guys informed.

    Cheers,
    BM

I think what stuffed me up is that I had a boot loader (LogonUI) which crashed the system. I didn't expect it to crash THAT hard.

    Live and Learn.
