hey fellow ibm users.
here is my dilemma, yesterday i picked up a brand new ibm thinkpad T42 - all was well, and still is so far, but on the top left corner, a dead pixel has miraculously appeared!
its bugging me now, as thats the only thing i see...
i sucked up all this money to buy this computer, heard too many good things.
now, where do i stand? do i keep it and ignore the pixel or call ibm to find a resolution? the computer is still covered under their 3 years warranty plan. i mean, this sort of thing, is it normal?
i had a dell before, for 5 years, not a single dead pixel.
i wasn't expecting this from ibm.
help... let me know what your take is on this.
thanks.

I think you should have 30 days to return the notebook for any reason whatsoever. Unfortunately, even ThinkPads have their problems.
-
thanks for your reply...
is that reason enough to return it? i am trying to find out if its just me or its normal to have a dead pixel in a new computer.
i dont want to be making a big deal out of smthng thats normal. -
Are you sure it's a dead pixel? Some ThinkPads have a problem with this traveling 'sticky' pixel that's apparently software related, and not a screen defect. Mine has this problem.
Try putting the very tip of your cursor directly on the pixel. Does a little scrollbar thing appear? If it does, then I'd suggest researching that a bit on the thinkpads.com forums.
If not, then send it back if you don't immediately need it. IBM/Lenovo will replace screens with dead pixels, but only if there's a certain amount of them.
As a side note, how does your T42 deal with screen flex/distortion? And how is the keyboard sensitivity? -
wow - you were right Trippytiger, as soon as I put the cursor's tip on that pixel, the scrollbar appears. As you suggested, I'll do a search on thinkpads.com and see if I can come up with a resolution. *sigh*
Other than that, there is ONE dead pixel for a fact. Its on the top left corner, kinda pinkish reddish purple one!
I love this computer, everything else exceeds my expectation, but these pixel things are getting on my nerves.
To answer your question, the screen flex/distortation isn't at all apparent to me, like I said; I am seeing things!
Keyboard sensitivity is quite decent also, much better than the DELL I had - however, nothing over the top - I wouldn't say that the keypad on this computer is better than any other... just my two cents.
Anyway, do contribute your opinions guys... I'd be grateful for all the help.
Thanks. -
So you've got that silly wandering sticky pixel and a real stuck (sounds more like a stuck one than a dead one) pixel? Harsh. If you have some time left on your 30 day return guarantee, I'd say keep using it and see how much it bothers you, and send it back if you just can't live with it.
And thanks for answering my questions about the screen and keyboard. I have a feeling that there's something wrong with both of mine, which is why I'm trying to send it back. Only got three days left, though, and Lenovo didn't call back about that like they said they would. -
I'd try to learn to live with it. You can send it back, but you might get another one like it. I have two on my desktop lcd, like yours are in the corner. It bugged me at first, but now I don't even notice them.

I have two dead/stuck pixels on my T42 screen. Luckily, at 1400x1050 resolution, you only see them if you really look hard for them.
-
Thanks for all the replies - I am still scratching my head.
So far, I have only ONE dead/stuck pixel... and yes its bothering me still. The darn thing!!!
Oh, as for the "moving dead pixel wanna be" - I just put the cursor's tip on top of it, and pressed the blue center scroll button, and since then, it has not shown up again.
IBM Thinkpad T42 - New owner, help, I am seeing things.
