I am trying to change the boot order from the HDD to the cd-rom to install windows 7, I found this set of instructions on the net but problem is with no.6 below, I don't see how I can select the cdrom? Please see attachment?

    Prepare the boot device

Confirm that an optical drive is in the boot device list of your BIOS setup.

    1. Power off the computer.
    2. Power on the computer.
    3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key. The BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
    4. Choose Startup from the menu.
    5. Choose Boot from the menu. Note the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
    6. In "Boot Priority Order", make sure "USB CD" (for the USB optical drives) or "ATAPI CD0" (for the Ultrabay Slim optical drive for ThinkPad UltraBase) is on top of "ATA HDD0".
    7. Press the F3 key to exit, or press the F10 key to save the new setup and then select Yes.
    8. Restart the computer.

can you boot into your recovery console by pressing the blue thinkvantage button? if yes, run the optical drive diagnostic.

It seems your computer is not picking up the optical drive. Try to remove the drive from the ultrabay slot then reinsert it.

If by "Recovery Console" you mean BIOS, I don't see an option in the setup for "Optical" drive diagnostic, there is only a HDD diagnostic. I will try now to find the instructions on the net on how to remove optical drive then reinsert, get back to you.

Just removed and reinserted the optical drive, same deal. How do I access the recovery console?

From the image you gave us the CD-ROM drive has already been recognised - ATAPI HL-DT-ST CD-RW/DVD-DRIVE (SM). Can't you scroll down to the ATAPI drive and press 'X' to reinclude the drive to the boot order?

Pressing the blue 'Thinkvantage' button on the keyboard when the laptop is just starting up only gives me 2 option, to boot normally and the other to go into the BIOS.

I can only scroll up and down on the boot order page, any other button I press only give s a loud beep.

On closer inspection it seems that a Supervisor password is activated on the system which locks out the BIOS settings. You need to enter the Supervisor password to delock the BIOS, you have to know this as there is no bypass. The only remedy for a forgotten Supervisor password is a new system board.

I bought this unit on ebay and works fine with XP on it, I am simply trying to upgrade to windows 7. When I choose to go into the bios, it asks for a password, I press ENTER, it shows the letters OK, I press ENTER again and this is how I enter the BIOS, are you saying that if I had known the password then I would have had the option to select the cdrom in the boot order?

Yes, the reason you can't change the boot order is because there is a Supervisor lock which prevents the BIOS settings from being tampered with. I think you need to go to the Security tab and enter the Supervisor credentials there to delock the BIOS.

Check out this thread as someone had similar experience to yours on the T60.

PC Doctor will not do anything for the Supervisor password i'm afraid. If you did not know the Supervisor password to begin with when you bought the system off eBay then I would contact the seller to see if they set the Supervisor password and hopefully they can give you the required credentials to delock the BIOS.

Contacting Lenovo wouldn't be much help, they don't recover lost passwords and they will change the whole system board for a fee which wouldn't be economical, especially for a R60.

I bought over a year ago, can't even remember the seller, guess I will have no choice but to continue using XP but what will happen if I should ever need to reload the OS on this unit? Thanks for the help, at least now I know what the situation is.

I got the password from the seller but now when I go into the BIOS, under STARTUP, this the new menu I am seeing now:

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/911/cimg0527zq.jpg

Even when I press F12 I am only seeing the HDD to boot from.

When I choose the "Network" option in STARTUP, this is what I am seeing

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/4577/cimg0528an.jpg

I am confused on how to set the boot order so it will show in the f12 list?

Anyone know where I can find the serial number on this machine? I tried calling IBM to fix this boot problem but they said I need the serial number before they can help me and that the serial number should be next to the "Type" number but on this unit, all I am seeing next to this Type number is 20v...3.5A?
