I have a new IBM T61 laptop and the sound is no longer working. I checked the volume settings in the system tray and on the actual laptop. Everything is set to max volume. I had this problem before and installing the IBM Hotkey driver corrected the prolbem. It did not this time. Reinstalling the sound drivers did not help either. Sound shows to be functioning correctly in Device Manager. Does anyone have any troubleshooting ideas to correct this problem?

What operating system? If it's Vista, can you see the meter when you click on the volume icon in the System Tray moving when you play media? How about in Control Panel? Headphones work?

OS is XP. You are able to see the volume meter in system tray, and it is maxed out. Same result with headphones.

We've had to send 3 T61's straight out the box back to the Lenovo depot in Atlanta due to no sound. This was with the factory image, as well as our custom image. It took me sending 1 machine back 4 times before it would get fixed (and that was after escalating thru hell and high water, and providing a detailed letter with all the troubleshooting steps that I took, to include working with their phone "techs")

Hi there, almost got killed when I hit the mute button on my wifes laptop -she had had it rebuild a little while ago to get sound back working... autch!

Well, as she needs sound for doing transcripts tomorrow morning.... I started looking for a solution and finaly found the simple trick :)
The MUTE button is ONLY MUTE -you cannot unmute by clicking the MUTE button again -how superb logical is this !?

The fix: hit the volume UP or DOWN and it works again :D :p

Have a nice sound filled day

Try this. Open the volume options, and click options, properties. Make sure the mixer device is set to your ThinkPad's soundcard. There are times when plugging in a USB device with speaker will set the mixer to USB mode despite being removed. Happened a couple of times on my X61.

This behaviour is present in all the past Thinkpad, but with my T61 if I press twice the MUTE button it will Un-MUTE. I don't want this behaviour, anyone knows how to disable the un-muting feature. maybe a different driver version?
