Drivers updated, am seeing no error messages anywhere just no sound coming out of either built in speakers or headphone out whether I play cd or online video, help please?

Also, I will be working on quite a few IBM'S so may have many questions to post as I come across problems so should I keep it all in one thread or post the different problems in different threads when I come across them?

Is there no sound in a Linux boot environment? I use a Knoppix boot CD to rule out software/OS/drivers vs hardware.
