I have an old T23 that I don't know what to do with. Everything works except the RAM. It'll do a physical memory dump shortly after booting up. Since it's so old, any RAM I find retail is really expensive. I've tried craigslist, begging off friends and even the Pay It Forward thread. So far, no luck.

My question is, if none of the other options work and I am forced to buy retail, is it worth it or should I just forget about this laptop and put the money towards something new?

I am a web programmer but I haven't had the need to program anything lately. This laptop was great for the school assignments I used it for and is still great for mobile web surfing. But, I haven't had the need to go mobile.

    So, what are your opinions?

Suitable RAM for your model is readily available, if you look more carefully. For $50 or less, you can have a very reliable and durable (albeit weak) computer that won't die on you or snap like a twig. Even if you don't use it, you could give it to your parents or use it as a small file server or something. IMO, a ThinkPad is worth it.

I would give it to someone who can put better use of it.

What type of RAM does the T23 use (e.g. PC66)?

Somebody has to have some lying around. I would hate to see a good machine simply get discarded.

That's the funny thing if you hang onto stuff long enough, it goes back up in value. I just sold 2GB of PC2700 desktop memory on eBay for $45 that I think I paid $20 for new 4-5 years ago.

You can try buying some memory, but I know from personal experience, the T2x machines can be very picky which memory they'll accept. You can guarantee compatibility by getting it from Lenovo, but you'll pay through the nose for it.

You might want to post this over on ThinkPads.com. The ratio of ThinkPad aficionados is much higher over there and they're probably much more likely to have the parts laying around needed to fix it. Just post a thread asking how much your machine is worth, then you can use that as a ballpark to make a thread to sell it. You also might be able to get some memory there cheaper than elsewhere. Plus the chances it'll work are probably pretty good if it was pulled from a similar machine.
