This is my first post to introduce myself to the forum, hope it all makes sense.
Can anyone shed some light on the possible cause for my machine not to boot up, when you hit the power button a very faint whirring sound can be heard which lasts a couple of seconds and then nothing, although the battery and Ac power light are illuminated, any help greatly appreciated as to the possible cause and potential solution to this irritating fault.
Has any other memer had a similar fault on their machine, would love to know how you repaired your machine.

    Regards
    Gothic.

Thinkpads have always used beeps at startup as error codes. If you get nothing at startup except whirring, then, that sounds fatal.

I'm no expert, so you may want another opinion.

Another option is to go to lenovos support site, enter your product code and get the hardware maintenance manual. It has details to check out problems.

Here's the link to the manual:

Might want to pull the battery and AC, then hold the power button for about 30 seconds to see if than does anything.

I have the same machine displaying the same symptoms. However if you continue trying the power button eventually it will go ahead and boot normally. Once it boots all seems to run normally. This leads me to believe the problem may be in the power button. Thoughts?

Note that this machine is behaving exactly like the above when it will not boot. A short whirr (which is the fan, I peeked inside to confirm) then nothing, but the two lights remain lit. Also if you do not hold down the power button until the lights go off, the bottom will warm up as if the computer is running.

That whirr sound is the fan trying to turn on with the rest of the system and then the system shuts down. Its a failing/failed planar.

I'm afraid I don't understand the word "planar" in this context. Could you please clarify?

He means you have a problem with your motherboard (planar = notebook motherboard)
