History Lesson: Lenovo 701 with its innovative feature.

I like the Forrest Gump intro. :p

Lenovo definitely needs to bring that feature back (or forward?). :D

haha 14.4 fax...prodigy. I hate to say it but my x61s doesn't look to much different than this. Looks like Lenovo keeps design cues for awhile.

If this is implemented again, ThinkPads would have such a tiny, tiny footprint.

I remember lusting after one of those as a kid. Price was a cool $3000+ here in Canada for a blazing 486DX-75, complete with external optical drive...or was that additional? Anyone know how durable that keyboard design turned out to be?

Hmm...yeah, considering it adds another set of moving parts to the mix, I wonder how solid those old expandables were compared to today's keyboards.

I assume for it fold out like that, it would have to have larger vertical keyboard spacing, so I assume the keys stick out further. Possibly mechanical switches?

Not real sure on that one, but I'd hazard a guess that you're probably close to the mark. Still...kinda nice to see that the ThinkPad style has remained consistent, although that 701 looks a lot more like those bento boxes on the official Lenovo blog than the current ThinkPads do.

After poking around the web for a bit, yes, the 701 keyboard's keys look like they have a tad more vertical height than current ThinkPad keys do, so I'm assuming they're probably using some sort of mechanical system like you stated. There seem to be a lot of used 701 keyboards floating around, though, interesting design.

Yea, it's definitely "boxy" for sure. I definitely don't mind it though; it's not that boxy. With that small of a footprint, you can pretty much store it anywhere. No need for large messenger bags and what not.

Yeah, with that small a screen, you could just put it in any ol' bag and go. I think it would be a really cool design to resurrect, sort of a corporate version of the EEE PC, but with more gusto.
