How reliable and what kind of condition are IBM's factor refurbs in, the prices look awfully tempting, and several of the units they have would meet my need well, while I can't afford a new thinkbook.

They are the best any way you take them: new or refurb. I was getting mine from uBid.com now I am getting them from ebay.com for much less.

It will be well built, but that doesn't mean something can't go wrong. Most refurbed notebooks tend to come with short warranties. If something were to go wrong, it will be expensive to fix. I don't know what you are looking to spend, but you might want to look on ebay. You could probably pick a T40//41 reasonably. They still may have some warranty left. With ThinkPads, the warranty follows the notebook, not the purchaser. If you want to go less expensive, a T22/23 can probably be had in the $400-600 range. Then you could put in a faster hard drive and more memory. As long as you don't ask it to do anything too intensive, should be good for a couple years. I just upgraded an older T22 with a 7200RPM hard drive and to 512MB of memory. It won't be quite as good as a newer one casue of the slower memory, but the performance was quite good. Good Luck.

I was looking at the T41p's and I can get them on ebay for a reasonable price, but the ones in IBMs store are several hundred dollars cheaper. Do you know if you can purchase extended warranty packages or anything with the refurbs?

Overstock.com has good prices for factory refurbs You can buy a two year extended protection plan for $49.99 on laptops that cost between $360 and $759.00.
