I've ordered a t61p from a supplier in Hong Kong. I'm travelling from mainland China (where I currently live) specifically to collect it.

I'd like to be as certain as I can be that there aren't any defects in the components when it is delivered to me. I'm not whether my warranty will cover me in mainland China, and in any case I face a big language barrier here - so I'd prefer to identify any issue whilst I'm still in Hong Kong and if necessary can get a refund/arrange for the supplier to return the laptop to lenovo.

Are there diagnostics programs that can test most/all of the components in the T61p?

Are there any common faults that are still occuring on T61p models that I should look out for?

I'll have 24hrs to test the laptop, so want to download anything I need before I travel to Hong Kong.

    The specifications are as follows:
    T7800 2.6G C2D; 2G(2x1G) RAM, 1G Intel Turbo Memory, 200GB/7.2Krpm , Rambo DVD+/- RW, Gigabit Ethernet; 15.4"WUXGA, 3D NB8P-GL/256MB vRAM, 802.11n, BT, FPR, PC Express, 9CELL, TC/Eng(C&L)Vista Ultimate

Thanks for any suggestions and apologies for my paranoia!

It wasn't cheap, but it was also the only model of the t61p they could order for me. Apparently Lenovo HK only keeps one model (which has to be ordered anyway.) I could have got the 2.2 with a 5400 drive etc for about $200 less, os it seemed like no-brainer.

The frightening thing is that it's still lots cheaper than a 2.2 in mainland china for which I was being quote over $4500 5 weeks ago.

Thanks for those 2 suggestions. Any others also appreciated :)

US$4500 or HK$4500? If its HK$ then its dirt cheap heh.
You'd think since they're manufactured in mainland China the prices will be quite reasonable there or is it?

yeah I think you're right. HK4500 ia like US$600 so that's highly improbable. lol who in China can afford a $4500 thinkpad unless they're rich govt officials but they'll probably get those free.

I have a trip to China early next year and hoping to pick something new there if prices are good but it doesn't look that way.

Certain irony since the T61p was made in Asia. You'd think the fuel savings would be taken into account as well as currency conversion especially with the dollar being so weak agains foreign currencies.

i think warranties in china are usually much easier to deal with then in the US. I had a Samsung and it had a 2 year warranty. and it broke like 4 times total. I just dropped it off at the place i bought it and they sent it in and called me to picked it up. But if you don;t speak chinese then its kinda of hard. I would just take it as not having a warranty at all

I have been living and working in Beijing these past 5 years and I can tell you guys the following:
    1) Thinkpads are NOT cheap in mainland china. In fact they are more expensive and usually have only 1 year warranty even for T series

    2) Lenovo will NOT honor the warranty of ANY thinkpads purchased outside of mainland china and that includes Hong Kong. Do not believe what the seller in HK tells you. I have checked this personally with Lenovo's Thinkpad service centre. (My X61 was bought in Singapore)

So my advise is do not buy your thinkpad from Hong Kong.
