OK, I bought a refurbished t61 that I absolutely love. However, it doesn't have an SD card reader. I'm going to buy an adapter.
Question. What is the slot on the left hand side called. A smart card slot? Express card? What kind of adapter am I looking for?
I know this is a 54mm slot, but will it also take a 34mm card.
Thinking about this one: http://www.amazon.com/Sandisk-SDAD1...sr=1-1&keywords=ExpressCard/54+SD+card+reader

You might have a smart card slot, if so you can't use that for SD cards as far as I know (if it fits a credit card, that is a smart card slot).
Your machine might have a express card or PC Card slot. I don't think they're compatible so you'll have to determine which one you have before you buy a card reader. If you post the full model number of your machine, someone here may be able to help you.
A 34mm express card will work in a 54mm slot, but you may want to get an adapter to fill in the empty space and keep it from moving around.
An alternative is to use a USB card reader, but you won't be able to tuck it into the machine. -
Don't know which machine type you own, but most T61 machines came with a 1 PC Card Slot and 1 ExpressCard slot. The Smart Card Reader was optional. As for detailed specs on the Express card and PC card slots, take a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the T61: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/42x3547_05.pdf before ordering.
I'm an idiot (T61 questions)
