I own two Thankpads, but have none. At what point do I escalate this?

I received my W510 on February 8th. A call was put in to complain about high pitched noises on Feb 20th. I was told to call back on Feb 22nd, once technicians were back.

They finally sent a technician on March 2nd. Well beyond the Next Business Day I paid for a warranty for.

The technician replaced the motherboard, and it did not fix the issue. I was forced to mail it into the depot, which I was able to do on March 5th, with their assurance I'd have it back in time for a trip out of town on March 13th.

Unfortunately, my grandfather died, and it changed my plans for that particular weekend, but I expected to come home to a note on the door from UPS.

    No note.

I called on on the 15th to see the status of it. It had been escalated to go to the Engineers. I called on Thursday, the 18th, to see where it stood. No change, was told they'd request an update, and to call back later that day.

I called today, the 22nd, to see the status of it. No change again.

So, I bought a next business day warranty on a laptop that I received, called issues in on within 2 weeks of receiving it. It's been a month since I called in with a problem, and it's been 2 weeks at the Depot.

And to add insult to injury, I received an X201 via trade on March 8th. It was brand new & sealed the original owner bought an X201 when he meant to buy an X201T, and put it up for sale instead of dealing with a 15% restocking fee. I traded my tablet for it. I took it with me the weekend of my grandpa's funeral, and found out that its right speaker did not work the 17th. It was shipped off on March 18th. No additional warranty had been purchased for this unit, just standard EZServ Depot.

Two brand new laptops, both flawed and requiring repair within 2 weeks of receiving them.

The one with a warranty that's supposed to keep the system at home for low downtime has left me 3 weekends without a system that can play videogames.

The one I got to hold me over until I got the first laptop returned is gone.

I'm left with no real computer. I'm borrowing my wife's right now.

At what point do I call Lenovo up and say I want new computers, damn the delays, and how do I go about convincing them to do so? Since both had problems called in within 2 weeks of my receiving them.

Also: potential issue: The X201 has an aftermarket 2GB stick of RAM in it. I'd want that back.

CPU whine. You can't fix it per se. You get lucky. Has to do with the CPU and motherboard implementation/design.

Not worth this effort in my opinion. It is just a part of using laptops. I have a slightly inclination that a lot of lenovo users seem to notice this because the laptops are very quite overall and that makes the noise stand out more.

The whine was bad enough it gave me headaches, which is why I took the trouble to call it in to get it fixed, and then shipped it off.

You'll probably have to skip this entire CPU line and wait till Sandy Bridge and hopefully Intel gonna address this issue.
As Jaredy said, not much to do. All my i5/i7 based PCs have this "feature" as well as some of the C2Ds.

In this day and age you should not get CPU whine.

    It shows bad design.

I returned a $2k Sony because of this, the same day it was delivered.

I was extremely disappointed to find my T410 has a slight noise - fortunately it's only noticeable when the volume is very loud on external speakers, so on a day-to-day basis I never hear it.

If slightly louder, it would have had the same treatment.

If the product cannot be repaired due to a systemic defect, he should be offered a refund.

Is it partially Intel's fault? Many brands have had this famous CPU whine.

there is a sort of half fix for it, but it does make the laptop heat up more than necessary.

You can locate the CPU away from the speakers and heat vent, and effectively insulating the noise, but this also decrease the thermal management efficiency.

The X200 did not exhibit this noise.

From the what I can tell from the calls, their part shortages are terrible. It's not just new builds being delayed weeks and months, it's the ones being repaired as well. I've apparently been waiting on a new CPU for over a week and a half now.

It's sad how this generation of Thinkpad has turned out.
