    1) Switchable graphics works only with Vista (also hopefully in upcoming Win7, when lenovo drivers are ready). It works in real time, from the battery icon in the taskbar.
    2) Create a "restore" DVDs/CD set. Unfortunately the restore disks also revert to a state including all the Lenovo Thinkvantage software and partitions, as well as the OS and the factory-versions of system-specific drivers...
    3) Clean out the Thinkvantage software and other Lenovo-pre-installed software you don't want to use
    4) Update your system using Thinkvantage update
    5) install your preferred programs (like office, firefox, antivirus, antispyware)
    6) Update your OS and Microsoft software (if any), though Microsoft Update service
    7) Perhaps create a separate partition for all data files - always safer than having them on the OS partition!
    8) Make an image of your operational copy of the OS and programs on an external HDD in case of disaster. I use Acronis.
    9) Decide on ongoing policy of creating/maintaining backups/mirror copies of your data file on an external HDD. I use the wonderful Synctoy 2.0 from Microsoft.

Thanks you all for the above advices. I have a question on the 'Restore' disc. In about 2 months time we should be getting the Window 7 upgrade. So, in the event that we have to restore the system after the Window 7 upgrade, would we need to restore to Vista first and then upgrade it to Window 7? Or, the Window 7 upgrade would be good enough to allow a clean restore/setup by itself without going through the Vista step?
