I'm trying to figure out which went bad, if not both...
I tried to update to Vista SP1 but the install failed and I got a BSOD. I took some advice and proceeded to re-seat the HD and RAM - I found one stick of memory had popped from its clips when I pulled the palmrest from my ThinkPad R61. I put it back but still get a BSOD when I try to use the recovery disk.
I definitely have a hardware problem so now I'm trying to figure out why this happened and what to do next.
I removed the HD and connected it to another computer with a USB to IDE cable but I get an error message that says there is a power surge problem at the USB port so I can't get to the HD.
So I'm trying to figure out what to do next; replace the HD or buy new RAM. Where should I start?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

You BSOD when trying to boot from the recovery disk?

Yep, and I just tried to run memtest from a USB key but can't get it to work for me....I'm f'ed.

By googling the BSOD message "stop: 0x0000c1f5" I get several explanations that refer to trying to install Vista SP1. It seems like a suck issue with Vista though I'm really not sure. If so and it's not my fault I'll be really pissed...

So I fixed the BSOD issue and I'm up and running but it seems like this is a common problem for some people installing Vista SP1. I fixed it by loading "systemrescueCD" and using instructions here: http://www.delmartian.com/nullpoint...0C1F5-0xC1F5-C1F5-BSOD-CLFS.SYS-KB946084.html
I'm absolutely livid that updating Vista would cause so much damage. This stuff is isn't easy for me but I got through it because I was willing to waste a lot of time - I can imagine the cost something like this could cause some people (send the computer to the MFG, pay someone, losing data, etc...).
Sorry for the rant...
I need help troubleshooting a BSOD...
