I have 1 GB RAM, should i get 2GB? If so, which brand memory is best value?

I just ordered thinkpad t60 widescreen and it comes with 1gb ram. I will be running alot of internet, pdf files, office files, many times multitasking these programs. Also, I plan to update to windows VISTA when it comes out. Is 1 GB ram enough or will I notice much better performance with 2 giglibites?

Also, the IBM ram seems expensive. Is there a cheaper place to get a 1 GB Ram stick that is comparible in performance with the IBM memory but at a lower price?

2 GB probably won't make much difference with XP for your uses, but by all accounts Vista will be far more memory-intensive. I am actually awaiting a T60 WS with 1 GB myself, and will probably invest in another GB at some point before making the upgrade to Vista. Newegg has various brands of compatible RAM for around $99 for a GB stick. As for brand it shouldn't make much difference, but I'd keep an eye on the Newegg user reviews to make sure you don't buy junk.

I ran my R60 with 512MB. It seemed to do OK. There is no need to do it right away. See how it goes before you upgrade.

It can't hurt to see how it runs before you install more; my T60 runs better since I upgraded from 512 to 1.5 GB RAM, though.

When you do upgrade, be sure to get ThinkPad-compatible RAM. Not everything that seems to match the specs will work. I had Kingston ValueRAM causing freezes and BSODs until I replaced it.

Does it really matter the configuration of the memories i use? For example, 2 x 512 mb sticks and 1 x 1 gb stick, or would it be better to have 2 x 1 gb sticks? or does it make a difference.

I had 1.5 GB RAM in my ThinkPad and removed a 512 MB module to stick it into another notebook. I don't notice any difference in performance between 1.5 GB and 1 GB RAM and I do a lot of multitasking. As for the different configurations you listed, I don't think you could tell a difference in everyday use. I would stay with 1 GB for now. You can always upgrade in the future.

Ofcourse if you want upgrading (easily) to be an option go for the 1 x 1GB module now, that way you don't have to sell (or toss) one 512MB module when you need the open slot.
