When I replaced my HDD of my T400, I forgot to follow the intructions of the manual to remove the battery pack first. Would my action damage my T400 and the HDD? Thanks a lot.

No, not unless you have the computer turned on, running your operating system while you pull out your hard drive. Removing the battery pack is just a precaution, but not a problem if you don't follow their instructions. I've done hard drive swapping between laptops all the time, and I've left the battery packs in while I installed it, so no problems.

Your fine. Even if it was on you probably wouldn't do any damange. Harddrives can be hot swappable even if it crashes your os the hardwaredrive should be fine.

Obviously though its best practice to have it off and have the battery removed.

The only issue I've seen is if you remove an older IDE drive while the system is POWERED ON..

    You have SATA. You're fine.
