I doubt many do this: protect the labels at the bottom

At the bottom of my T61, there are 4 labels (XP pro, SN number, Product type, etc). I know that they are going to damaged due to wears and tears over the time. Here is what I did:

put a thin transparent plastic (such as food wrap) on top of each label and then put slightly larger Scotch Packaging Tape on of each.

I did the same thing to my old Dell machine.

Nothing magic and just wanted to share it with you.

Edit: writing down those numbers and putting them somewhere is also a good idea.

I drag my T60 across my bed nightly before I fall asleep, and the only problem sticker was the MS COA. That sticker was wearing its letters/numbers completely off, so I stuck a square of packing tape over it. The rest have been find though.

If you move the laptop a lot (business travel or student life), some sort of label protection is really needed.

Just take a digital picture of the bottom of your Thinkpad and don't compress it (keep high resolution).

I have my laptop with me daily, and the key labels show almost zero wear. the only one that had stupid amounts of wear was the "anti pirate deluxe piracy edition" thing from microsoft that falls apart if you look at it wrong.

Me too. My product info label was the only one that has wear (dirt and dust to be exact).
