After researching for a while I decided I will be happiest with a Thinkpad. They were the first laptop I ever used and I am currently borrowing one from my girlfriend ever since my POS Dell decided it needed a new mother board AGAIN.

    Specs-
    PENTIUM M 750 1.86 GHZ - 15.4" TFT
    Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Free 512MB Additional Memory, Customer Installed
    256 MB (1 NonParity DDR2 SDRAM SoDIMM PC2-4200)
    128MB ATI Mobility RADEON X600
40GB 5400 rpm SATA Hard Drive
ThinkPad 24x/24x/24x/8x Combo Ultrabay Enhanced Drive
11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Adapter II + bluetooth
    ThinkPad Z60m Series 6 Cell Li-Ion Battery
THINKPLUS EXTENDED SERVICE AGREEMENT - 4 YEARS

    Cost- $1484.35 with tax-1573.42
    expected delivery 2-1-06

    I am comming from a Dell 5150 with P4 3.06, 32mb Ati intergrated, 30G 4200rpm HD, CDrw/dvd read, intergrated wireless, 2x256mb and 15inch UXGA.

I think the thinkpad will be a nice and hopefully more reliable upgrade. I will probably upgrade the memory at some point but for now I got what I could afford. I am no where near filling my 30g hd and now using it as an external HD so I could not see getting one larger.

I picked out the Z60m over an Asus or Msi for 3 reasons
    1. Reliablility of past IBM notebooks and everyone here seems to agree they are one of the best for build quality and ruggedness
    2. Titanium lid- My girlfriend had her screen replaced from screen flex and I like the use of metal in a product
    3. I found a way to get one with a dedicated 128mb GPU for under $1500 before tax and with a 4 year warranty

1 and 3 are what I was looking for an 2 sealed the deal. :buyIBM:

Things I also like about IBM-
That little red dot in the middle that acts like a mouse (name?)
    User friendly keyboard
IMO one of the most professional looking laptops

Normally January 06 would have been one of the longest months of my life waiting for this thing but I will be turning 21 on the 12 so I doubt this will hold true. But between now and the 12th... :(

congratulations on your decision and my classmate has bought it in HONGKONG and this weekend, he will received it. But his z60m tip is not Ti and yours is Ti, isn't it?

I think Z60m wsxga TFT is excellent. and the nit of it is high. :)

Yes it does. It was one of my reasons for buying it. I do not know why more do not offer this. It just makes sense to me.

That's called a "trackpoint" and Thinkpads are famous for this haptics/tactile and very precise working mouse input environment, as they are for their keyboards too!

I would guess that is the case. But to me it is no different then making a car and using plastic in the cooling system. The little you save now is not worth what you will be dealing with later. I think the titanium lid is a great move for IBM and hope it is offered on more models in the future.

Some people also find the Titanium lid ugly and pointless. I haven't seen it in person, but I feel that I'd be one of those people.

It's not just about maximum protection. It has to be a combination between protection, cost, and usability (which means - weight, size, even looks). Heck, one could make the entire laptop out of titanium, would you like that?

I, personally, find the magnesium lid (or even the ABS plastic) just fine.

I *really* wanted to get a widescreen Z model over the T43, but the problem is that the *none* of the 14" Z models offer the ATI graphics... and one of my priorities is WEIGHT... so I figured I'd settle for the 64MB X300 since I won't be playing stuff like Halflife / Counterstrike / Battlefield / Halo, whatever.... I'll be playing less intense stuff most likely... CIV4, Chessmaster X, etc, etc... If I want the heavy 3D , I have my desktop here with nVidia 6800 GT OC 256MB, AMD 64 3200 & 1GBRAM.... so I won't be left out if I ever want to buy one of those games.... I don't have time for loads of online gaming anyhow.. not like I used to. I even canceled my EQ2 account way back in May (I was getting sick of it anyhow... LOL).
